Job Summary
Under general direction, the Mechanical Engineer I is responsible for professional engineering work involving evaluating and studying the Authority’s generating facilities.
Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public 24 hours per day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand, and may be called in on short notice during power outages and other emergencies. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Gathers and correlates basic engineering data.
- Performs detailed or routine engineering research and development assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.
- Works on less complicated design of specific components and equipment.
- Is involved in the evaluation of existing systems and recommends efficiency changes and plant improvement projects.
- Coordinates operation, maintenance and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment.
- Prepares engineering specifications for minor overhauls on turbines and mechanical equipment.
- Prepares special reports on the maintenance and repair of turbines and mechanical equipment.
- Translates technical guidance received from supervisor into useable engineering data applicable to particular assignments.
- Serves as liaison with equipment manufacturers and contractors.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of mathematics required in complex mathematical computations.
- Knowledge of modern training and safety practices.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety.
- Ability to operate and utilize personal computers and their related peripherals.
- Ability to maintain technical and administrative records.
- Ability to prepare drawings and sketches of generating plants and distribution lines.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with contractors, co-workers and all others contacted during the course of work.
- Some evaluation, originality or ingenuity is required.
Education & Experience
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering and one (1) year of experience in mechanical engineering work.
