This is a part-time, 19.5 hours per week, classified position for an artistic Costume Designer to create and/or gather wardrobes for actors in our theatre program. Your work will play an important part in setting the tone of a story and enhancing the actors’ performances. As Costume Designer, you must be very creative and well-versed in different garment types and styles. Advanced sewing skills required. You should be able to compile visual representations of costumes and be able to construct wardrobes for cast members within deadlines for quarterly theatre productions. This position collaborates closely with the theatre arts production team to create the best visual effect.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Study script to understand costume requirements in terms of setting, era and character attributes
- Perform research on historical periods and different regions
- Develop costume plots for characters
- Collaborate with all production staff
- Create visual representations of costumes and present them for approval
- Construct the final designs with fabrics, styles and colors
- Purchase or rent costume pieces, accessories, materials, and supplies as necessary
- Work within budgetary constraints
- Supervise fittings and dress rehearsals
- Assume responsibility of dry-cleaning, laundering, maintenance, and storage of costumes
- Organize wardrobe stock and multi-purpose work areas
- Assist students in selecting costume pieces for the student-directed one-act plays
AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
Maintain and insure that department equipment and building use policies are followed.
Represent the theatre program and the college in a professional and friendly manner.
Maintain a safe and organized work environment.

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience creating costumes for a variety of plays
- Advanced sewing skills
- Proven production experience as costume designer or similar role
- Knowledge of design and textiles
- Understand a range of styles and cultural/historical elements
- Knowledge of vintage clothing values and their care
- Aptitude in research
- Excellent communication and people skills
- Creativity and attention to detail
- Well-organized and reliable
- High school diploma
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES:
Valid Driver’s License and/or ability to gather and transport relevant materials and supplies

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:
Requires lifting storage tubs of stock and other physical needs of the wardrobe storage area of up to 40 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily, but not limited to, the costume shop, stage space, dressing rooms, storage facilities, and support areas of the Theatre.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Department Chair and/or Director.
