Seasonal, part-time position responsible for conducting creel surveys, fish community monitoring, sportfish monitoring, and submersed vegetation mapping. Primary responsibilities are (1) conducting a 24-week (November 2023 through May 2024) roving creel on Lochloosa and Newnans Lakes in Alachua County and (2) electrofishing on lakes and rivers in north central Florida.
Job Duties:
Specific duties associated with these responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing anglers about their catch and harvest of freshwater fish as well as assisting biologists with electrofishing surveys, trawling, fish measurement and identification, aquatic plant identification, data entry, collecting fish carcasses from a local fish camp, otolith preparation and age determination, and collecting water samples on Lochloosa, Newnans, and Orange lakes.
Position is expected to work some weekdays and most weekend days.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of sampling techniques for fish, aquatic habitat and/or water quality.
- Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to sampling and evaluation of fish populations and aquatic habitats.
- Knowledge of: Common freshwater fishes and aquatic plants
- Skill in: Boat/outboard motor operation, trailer towing with a ½ ton truck and data recording and entry.
- Ability to: Effectively communicate with the public and work independently and part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of post high school experience in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction. Vocational training or college, as described below, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience, or An associate of science degree from an accredited college in the field of wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or agriculture studies and one year of wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agricultural or construction experience, or An associate of arts or science degree from an accredited college and two years of wildlife, fisheries, environmental or related agricultural or construction experience, or Sixty (60) semester hours at an accredited college or university which include 21 semester hours in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological, biological or agricultural studies may substitute for the required college.
