Summary

The Institute of Continuing Legal Education at the University of Michigan is the leading provider of how-to solutions to provide Michigan lawyers with the tools they need for success in their practice. We are looking for an Editor Associate as part of our Editing and Production department.

Reporting to the Manager of Quality, Curation, Editing, and Production, the Editor Associate coordinates workflow, copyediting, cite checking, production, and publication of print and online editorial projects with a basic level of difficulty, as determined by length of the print book, complexity of the law involved, or overall nature of the project (e.g., update versus revision). Assumes management of repositories with a basic level of difficulty, as determined by size of repository and number of files involved as well as complexity of database involved. Fully remote work is an option. This option does include, at most, two annual in-person trainings.

Responsibilities*

45% – Coordinate the publication of print and online content with a basic level of difficulty, as determined by length of the print book, complexity of the law involved, or overall nature of the project (e.g., update versus revision):

  • Copyedits content for style, grammar, consistency, understandability, and usability following ICLE’s quality standards by comparing content with established Quality System standards and making necessary updates to meet these standards
  • Verify legal citations and other references
  • Tag content for ICLE’s online and print publishing systems
  • Provides knowledge and input about the product necessary for decision making, standards, and deadlines, in particular, issues that may require more time or resources for completion

45% – Carry out other tasks in support of production of content (including but not limited to the following)

  • Proofread
  • Process contributor changes, including publishing agreements and access requests
  • Assist editor senior with producing automated document product
  • Convert documents into XML with tagging
  • Provide backup for processing files and entering data for Michigan Law Online repository
  • Produce and edit contributor recognition list
  • Cite check (preliminary and verification)
  • Produce redlined files of content for ICLE attorneys
  • Check law changes and input data in law updating tools
  • Process photos
  • Create, launch, and process surveys

5% – Actively participate in ICLE teams and project groups:

  • Be an active and engaged participant with us in ICLE teams and project groups to achieve process improvements and implement projects within ICLE’s strategic plan

5% – Other tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • A cover letter and resume are required when applying to this position
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 1-2 years of paid editing experience
  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills
  • Able to pass a work sample exercise administered by ICLE

Desired Qualifications*

  • Website publishing and print typesetting software experience desired
