Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a part-time Scenic Charge Artist! Working under the supervision of the Shop Supervisor(s) or the Technical Director, employee will act as a project lead, executing the tasks from the scene shop supervisor in the support of productions and maintenance while training other part-time staff, student labor, and lab students.
Charge Artist will be (mostly) autonomous as far as scheduling. Charge will work directly with design to establish colors and techniques. Shop staff will help facilitate and assist as needed.
Summary of Responsibilities

  • Builds scenery for the School of the Arts productions and rig scenery or other elements supporting performance events.
  • Performs tool maintenance and supervises inspections on tools and equipment for the shop and performance venues. Performs necessary maintenance of equipment in performance venues. Encourages use of personal protection equipment and safe work procedures.
  • Leads part-time staff and students in executing projects and trains part-time staff, student labor, and lab students in scenic construction methods, and the use of hand and power tools.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency and four years experience or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to four years.
Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years experience in related field or any combination of education and/or experience related to the position classification summary totaling a minimum of 7 years.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of basic construction practices and common building materials.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry related to construction.
  • Knowledge concerning the use of email, word processing programs, and calendaring.

Skills

  • Skills in rough and finish carpentry. Skills in welding.
  • Skills in interpreting construction drawings.
  • Skills in both verbal and written communication.

Abilities

  • Ability to work autonomously to complete tasks by production deadlines.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to lead a team of 3-6 people in execution of projects.
