Immigration Legal Assistant (Part-time)

Part-time position starting at $24.60 – $27.36/hr (D.O.E)

Position Description

The Immigration Legal Assistant will provide a full range of secretarial, clerical, and administrative support to the immigration department’s legal staff.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with Dari-speaking clients or prospective clients via phone and e-mail.
  • Conduct intakes with prospective clients.
  • Schedule consultations and appointments for attorneys and DOJ accredited reps.
  • Work with clients to gather necessary documentation and information.
  • Translate documents from Dari to English and vice versa.
  • Conduct research for humanitarian-based immigration cases.
  • Provide administrative support including copying, scanning, filing, and maintaining electronic and physical files.
  • Be available to complete other office tasks as assigned by legal staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess a combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to perform the responsibilities of the position.

  • Associate’s degree.
  • At least 6 months of experience in legal support services and/or social services.
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking) and Dari (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Able to translate documents from Dari to English.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams and/or Zoom.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Organized and able to multi-task.
  • Able to maintain strict client confidentiality and observe and follow all other ethical rules and practices of our organization.
  • Able to work independently, complete projects, meet deadlines, and problem solve while maintaining high ethical standards.
  • Positive customer service/interpersonal skills.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Strong desire to work with refugees and immigrants.
  • Sensitive to immigrant/client issues, including cultural and religious differences and trauma they may have experienced.
  • Able to work within the mission, goals, and objectives of Catholic Community Services of Western Washington.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluent in Pashto (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in law, justice, social services, or similar field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in immigration legal support services.
  • Experience with humanitarian-based immigration applications such as SIV, asylum, TPS.
