Job Description

Position Overview

The KIPP NYC Culinary Team provides scratch made, nutritious, and delicious meals for approximately 5,000 students and 300 staff members across five main production kitchens and several satellite locations, serving 10 schools in the 2023-2024 school year. The Associate Director of Operations is a critical role and is responsible for managing many of the daily operational aspects of the Culinary Team. Working directly with the Sr. Director and the Executive Chef/AD, the ADOO will ensure that our kitchen teams have the resources necessary to successfully fulfill our mission. A central function of this role is the management of our satellite locations and food servers. The ADOO reports directly to the Sr. Director of the KIPP NYC Culinary Team.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Development

  • Serve as a liaison between Recipient Agency school teams and the Culinary Teams, including but not limited to supporting with meal schedule development, records keeping, dietary restriction tracking, family communications, and problem solving
  • Partner closely with KIPP NYC Regional Operations, HR, Data & Tech, and Finance
  • Optimize systems for staff meal plans, school catering requests, and other adjacent programs such as the student worker program
  • Seek out new vendors, equipment and software to systemize and optimize KIPP NYC Culinary Team services
  • Contribute to team culture by executing logistics for team appreciation events and meetings (e.g. birthdays, team gatherings and celebrations, professional development).
  • Routinely collect, analyze and present feedback from staff, families and students

People Management

  • Manage and support our satellite locations, including directly managing our delivery driver(s) and satellite servers.
  • Routinely meet with Chefs de Cuisine regarding back of the house administrative and compliance protocols
  • Train and routinely meet with servers regarding front of house systems and protocols to ensure safe, accountable and aesthetically inviting meal service spaces
  • Serve as liaison with KIPP NYC HR team to assist in onboarding and off boarding Culinary Team staff including compliance, anti-bias trainings in alignment with KIPP Values, technology, and payroll.
  • Manage student worker program leaders

Finance and Compliance

  • Oversee student meal count and reporting systems across multiple sites
  • Coordinate efficient and accurate accounting systems for staff meal plans and catering
  • Manage team expenses, including reconciliation of credit card receipts, invoice management, and hourly employee payroll
  • Coordinate contracted and vended work and work closely with KIPP NYC Finance team to ensure all accounts are in good standing
  • Ensure program is in compliance with stakeholders from Department of Health, NYSED, and other agencies
  • Seek out grant opportunities, and prepare proposals to secure additional funding
  • Support the Director of Compliance with billing at KIPP sites not yet participating in the KIPP Culinary Program with annual compliance efforts including “lunch forms”, School Foods partnerships, etc.

Facilities

  • Work closely with Sr. Director and EC/AD to ensure that all kitchens and cafeterias are properly equipped in order to execute our meal programs
  • Collaborate with KIPP NYC and DOE facilities staff to ensure consistent cleaning maintenance of meal service spaces
  • Coordinate work with existing and new contractors and vendors to ensure kitchens and equipment to promptly repair or replace equipment when necessary.
  • Oversee satellite delivery routes and systems and ensure that delivery vehicle(s) and equipment are in working order.

Other

  • Oversee implementation and management of food service software in support of daily operations and compliance
  • Develop internal and external marketing strategies that support, celebrate, and enhance the mission of the KIPP NYC Culinary Team
  • As needed, the Associate Director of Operations of the KIPP NYC Culinary Team can also be available to lead ad-hoc projects or initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree OR diploma/certificate of program completion from an accredited culinary program
  • At least 5 years of work experience in event planning/management
  • At least 3 years’ experience managing a small team and multiple complex projects
  • Experience with food and health compliance processes
  • A passion for food justice and nutrition security
  • Demonstrated ability to indirectly manage and influence teams and individuals to meet specific and strategic outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple projects and competing priorities across multiple teams of people with a meticulous attention to detail
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to the KIPP mission with school based experience strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Team player with strong interpersonal/influence skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Excel
  • Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environment and a healthy measure of the character traits we value: zest, grit, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude and a sense of humor.

Compensation:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $97,850-$100,940. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience.
