The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department seeks a reliable, trustworthy, engaging, motivated and experienced “Junior” Assistant Coach to bring a positive, energetic, and forward-thinking presence to the Torpedoes Swim Team. The West Springfield Torpedoes is a competitive swim program that serves the youth of West Springfield during two distinct swim seasons (Winter & Summer). The team consists of approximately 80-100 swimmers, trains over three different group levels, and utilizes one indoor, six-lane pool located at the West Springfield High School. The “Junior” Assistant Swim Coach responsibilities include assisting the Torpedoes Head & Assistant Coaches with educating swimmers on various techniques and styles, overseeing training, which includes dryland exercises, and preparing swimmers for meets. “Junior” Assistant Swim Coach(es) are expected to be in the water with the swimmers to provide visual training. To be successful, Swim Coaches should be empathetic, patient,
and understand the varying abilities of swimmers on the team. Exceptional “Junior” Assistant Swim Coach(es)’s are those who place performance over results and are able to motivate and inspire. Torpedoes Swim Team is co-sponsored by the West Springfield Park & Recreation Department and is a coach-facilitated organization supported by a parent-run volunteer Board of Directors that cooperatively work together to create a culture that aims to develop well rounded swimmers and students. “Junior” Assistant Swim Coach(es)’s should have excellent organizational, communication, and public relations skills. This position is seasonal (Winter Season: October-January, Summer Season: April-July).
Examples of Duties
-Assist Head & Assistant Coaches with structured practices tailored to meet the needs of each training group
-When asked, lead swimmers in the predetermined Dryland Exercises prior to pool time
-Reinforce proper technique for all four strokes, along with starts, dives, finishes, rolls, turns, floats and breathing
-Educate swimmers on water safety
-Use a range of activities to improve water confidence.
-Expected to enter water to provide direction to younger swimmers.
-Ensure the pool or training area is clean, well-maintained, and free of hazards
-Communicate in a professional and timely manner with coaches, swimmers, and parents
Typical Qualifications
-Three plus years of swimming experience preferred
-Solid knowledge of all four strokes and related techniques
-Experience leading and mentoring preferred
-Strong enthusiasm and desire for continued growth in an environment of respect, integrity, caring, and understanding
-Clear communication skills
-Passion for competitive swimming
-Perform other duties as assigned
Supplemental Information
Shift: 5:45pm-7:15pm on practice days, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.
It is not required that the Junior Coach be at every practice – the schedule will ultimately be determined by the Head Coaches.
*If the Junior Assistant Coach is an active, competing member of the Torpedoes Swim Team, the paid “Coaching Shift” will end at 7:15pm; at which point the Junior Assistant Coach will join swimmers for practice in the pool. The position of “Junior Assistant Coach” IS NOT an exemption from practice for active team members. “Junior Assistant Coaches” will be held to the same practice & meet requirements as all Torpedoes Swimmers.
Salary: The salary range for this position is $17.00 (“Junior” Assistant Swim Coach)
Requirements: Must be a minimum of 14 years of age at time of hire. Qualified candidates should be certified in CPR & First Aid. Candidates should have excellent patience and communication skills. Must be able to provide their own transportation to and from swim practices.
