Senior project manager – fire engineer/code specialist

Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Fire Engineer/Code Specialist to join our Infrastructure Advisory Services (IAS) Fire-Life Safety Team. Based in either New York, NY or Boston, MA, you will join a diverse team of fire-life safety specialists involved in the delivery of a wide range of infrastructure projects throughout North America and beyond. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of fire-life safety strategies for projects and will work closely with our mechanical, fire-protection, and electrical engineers, and other design professionals in their design and implementation.

As a Senior Fire Engineer/Code Specialist working as an integral part of the infrastructure advisory group, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Fire engineering with a focus on Building Code and Fire Code consulting, fire protection and egress strategies, including standpipe/sprinkler design, fire alarm design, and performance-based fire engineering design on local, national, and international projects
  • Review and approve architectural and fire protection drawings, engineering calculations, and other design documents for new construction or modification of existing facilities
  • Develop fire life safety strategies, and support performance-based designs that are a departure from the prescriptive code requirements
  • Develop and implement fire prevention programs and procedures to eliminate personnel injury and minimize property damage due to fire
  • Perform facility and life-safety evaluations to determine fire risk and provide effective and efficient engineered solutions to mitigate risk
  • Perform and review hydraulic calculations for determining acceptable water supply designed to meet fire suppression demands
  • Develop emergency services baseline needs assessment to document the minimum services needed to support life safety and property protection
  • Coordinate and conduct building and fire code reviews and prepare project-related technical reports
  • Effectively communicate with project team members, clients, AHJs and other third-party stakeholders
  • Satisfy client needs and expectations by completing assigned tasks on schedule and within budget
  • Business development, proposal preparation, and team building

Candidate Specification

The ideal candidate will have experience working within our primary markets along with the following preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering (preferably Fire Protection), Architecture, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in code consulting, design of fire suppression and alarm systems, and developing performance-based strategies in a project design environment is required
  • Registered Professional Engineer or equivalent professional designation preferred
  • Experience in developing building code concepts and equivalencies, conducting building plan reviews, and conducting field inspections
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist plus a combination of relevant education and experience
  • Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building/fire codes
  • Understanding of intent and the independent and interdependent relationship between applicable building codes, fire codes, and national consensus codes and standards
  • Experience using and interpreting the IBC and its referenced codes/standards (e.g.,NFPA) applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies
  • Experienced and comfortable interacting with jurisdictional authorities to present and defend proposed code approach
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently, and to own initiative, in the development of successful code strategies and approaches

Salary Range for the State of NY only: $110,000 – $145,000
