The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy has a full-time opportunity available for an Environmental Specialist III on the Water Planning Team. We are looking for a candidate who is service-driven, customer-focused, team-oriented, who loves to learn, and has a high personal standard of integrity.
What you will do!
As a part of the Water Planning Section, you will work with an experienced team of environmental specialists at NDEE, as well as with your counterparts at Nebraska’s Natural Resource Districts, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Working closely with your teammates, you will be tasked with nonpoint source water quality grant project management through the Department’s Clean Water Act Section 319 Nonpoint Source Management program.

Location and address of position: 245 Fallbrook Blvd – Suite 100 – Lincoln, NE
Work schedule: Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Flexible schedule, remote work, and 10-hour workdays may be allowed after six-month probation with management approval.
Examples of Work
• Manage and coordinate the Clean Water Act Section 319 Program.
• Manage Projects and assist staff with the management of nonpoint source 319 projects.
• Advocate for water quality by working with state and federal agencies, project stakeholders, and the public.
• Lead community-based planning efforts related to nonpoint source projects.
• Facilitate state and program tracking of 319 grants.
• Maintain and update 319 program guidance.
• Assist with writing and editing Watershed Management Plans for areas impaired by nonpoint source pollution.
• Update EPA Nonpoint Source tracking database
• Represent NDEE at meetings and on committees involving nonpoint source pollution issues.
• Assess water quality data and information to determine pollutant load and reduction requirements for use in water quality planning within Nebraska’s nonpoint source management program.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree in the physical sciences, natural sciences, environmental science, geology, biology, agronomy, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, hydrology, community and regional planning, or a related field AND two years of professional experience in a related field. Experience may substitute for education or a year-for-year basis.

OTHER: Valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent transportation; ability to travel overnight, ability to lift 20 pounds, ability to climb, bend and stoop; ability to work in outdoor temperature extremes, ability to walk on uneven terrains, ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles of ecology, geology and hydrology; biological, physical and chemical sciences; statistical and analytical methods; word processing, spreadsheet and database management computer software.
Skill in: Communicating with individuals and groups with varying technical backgrounds to collect and relay information; listening to and understanding others; prioritizing workloads; using analytical judgment to make decisions; public speaking and providing presentations.
Ability to: Learn and apply local, State and federal environmental laws, regulations and standards; learn, apply and uphold agency policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private officials and with the general public; read and interpret topographic and geologic maps; organize, analyze and interpret data to draw conclusions and prepare reports and technical papers; use computers and other tools for data storage and analysis; work outside in varying elements and terrains.
