Overview of Position
Under the direct supervision of the Grounds Foreperson, the responsibilities of this position are to act as a lead gardener, work with the grounds crews, and perform various gardening and landscaping duties.
Essential Functions
- Performs various grounds maintenance activities including, but not limited to: mowing, weeding, raking, fertilizing, mulching, pruning, tree removal, ground preparation, planting, transplanting, general clean-up work, and snow removal.
- Acts as lead gardener for assigned permanent and seasonal gardeners; duties include providing direction to gardeners in proper grounds maintenance procedures, meeting project schedules, ensuring that work is performed in a professional and safe manner, and ensuring that assigned equipment is functioning and accounted for.
- Maintains landscape areas, playgrounds, and fields.
- Operates small powered equipment including, but not limited to such items as lawn mowers, edgers, thatchers, spreaders, perforators, rototillers, rollers, and chain saws.
- Assists in the training and evaluating of grounds crew members; maintains daily work logs and time reports for assigned gardeners; ensures that District policies are followed.
- Assists in developing and conducting training for best practices in mowing, weeding, raking, fertilizing, mulching, pruning, tree removal, ground preparation, planting, transplanting, using pesticides and alternative pesticide control procedures, and in operation of power and grounds maintenance equipment; assists in establishing new equipment specifications.
- Drives vehicles, pulls a trailer, and operates other machinery as needed.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Environmental Services Foreperson or designee.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
When Working as a Foreperson:
Supervises the work of grounds crews and monitors and organizes projects for turf care, bed maintenance, playground, and irrigation systems.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must possess good physical fitness; required to work outdoors and may be exposed to inclement weather; requires moderate physical effort, such as frequent standing, lifting, walking, stooping, digging, guiding, and/or carrying of materials or equipment up to 75 lbs; occasional periods of sustained effort; may periodically handle hazardous and toxic chemicals and pesticides; required to be able to drive a truck/vehicles with both standard and automatic transmissions.
Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
LICENSES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Washington State driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
