University Communications and Marketing provides strategic leadership to protect, advance, and elevate the university’s brand and reputation in Indiana and around the world by creating guiding resources for and collaborating with communications and marketing partners across all IU campuses, schools, departments, and centers.

The Office of the Vice President for International Affairs (OVPIA) and the teams of staff in OVPIA’s offices are the stewards of international activity across all campuses of Indiana University. We provide strategic leadership and advocacy for all international programs and projects and coordinate the resources necessary to sustain their growth.

Our goal is to enable as many students, faculty, and staff as possible to pursue international and intercultural knowledge and experiences and to become engaged global citizens.

Within OVPIA, the Office of International Services provides international students and scholars with assistance in all areas related to international study including admissions, visas, advising, and employment.

Job Summary

The Director of Communications and Marketing serves as chief communications and marketing strategist for the Office of International Services (OIS) and campus international programs. This includes establishing and ensuring consistent application of a high-level communication and marketing strategy to advance the international identity of IU and visibility of the OIS for a wide range of internal and external constituencies. In alignment with University Communications and Marketing, the director is responsible for developing the OIS brand, overseeing its deployment across OIS units, and ensuring it works in concert with the overall branding strategy of the university.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides business/systems analysis and technical support for OIS communications activities, especially in the area of website development and Salesforce CRM deployment.
  • Supervises the OIS marketing and communications team, with responsibility for international recruitment, admissions, and student and scholar support and outreach initiatives.
  • Serves on the OIS senior staff team, contributing to broad strategic planning efforts, and serves as a liaison to various campus and university units, committees, and partners.
  • Develops and implements a strategic communication and marketing plan that advances the visibility of the OIS and the international identity of IU. This strategic plan will address both policy development and tactical operations related to messaging, content creation, digital asset management, web development and maintenance, crisis communications, Salesforce Marketing Cloud/CRM, and social media deployment, print and digital publications, data presentation and dissemination, public events management and protocols for hosting international delegations.
  • Ensures consistent quality and adherence to institutional branding guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Serves as the primary technical and functional resource for communication and marketing platforms utilized by the OIS. This includes utilizing web and CRM analytics to inform decisions, determining scope of communication activities that are feasible within IU-provided systems and available OIS resources, and acting as a first line of review for technical issues related to communication activities.
  • Oversees the development, creation, and dissemination of both templates and content for strategic communication initiatives across all OIS units and executive leadership.
  • Directs OIS marketing and communications team operations.
  • Provides operational oversight to other OIS staff with designated communication or marketing outreach roles, including training on system usage and communications policy.
  • Serves as manager of the OIS brand to ensure compliance with relevant university, OIS, and industry standards.
  • Liaises with communications staff across schools and community organizations to facilitate collaboration on promoting IU’s strategic international initiatives.
  • Serves as project manager for OIS communication and marketing projects done in conjunction with University Communications and Marketing or external vendors.
  • Manages related budgets.

General Responsibilities

  • Independently develops and executes basic and complex strategic marketing plans for a department or functional area within a department to advance goals and objectives, including data collection and market research, target market definition, development of project timelines, sourcing of promotional materials, and marketing content creation.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests from stakeholders and explains information regarding policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders, including vendors, and acts as a collaborative resource in curating marketing plans to relevant initiatives, groups, events, and programs.
  • Regularly researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty, including information on various marketing channels (print, online, electronic, email, social media, and direct mail).
  • May participate in team-based marketing planning to align strategies and deadlines across various concurrent projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborates with users of various software programs and creative platforms to create and deliver content and marketing materials in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Marketing Generalists; may make process and operational recommendations to manager.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English, public relations, or related field

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in communications, public relations, media arts, graphic arts, or related area

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 5 years in relevant field

Preferred

  • 5 years of progressively responsible communications experience, including web development and emerging technologies
  • Experience in project and design management at a research university or other large complex, internationally-focused organization
  • Events management experience
  • 1 year of sustained and/or cumulative intercultural encounters with people of other countries and cultures, at home and/or through periods of time spent overseas

  • Familiarity with the following a plus: Salesforce, Slate, Adobe Suite: Photoshop, InDesign, and Lightroom

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

This position will work primarily in-person from the newly constructed Ferguson International Center.

This position may be eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Advertised Salary

$72,000 – $80,000 per year
