General Statement of Duties

Forsyth County Department of Social Services is accepting applications for Sr. Social Workers in our Children’s Services Division. Positions are typically located in Family & Children Services in programs areas such as Adoptions, CPS, F&C AHU, In-Home Services, Foster Care and other departments within DSS.

Positions available are subject to change depending on vacancies at the time of application.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, compassionate, dependable professional with excellent assessment skills, sound judgement and the ability to serve children and families from all socioeconomic backgrounds with a range of mental capacities without personal bias. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.

An employee in this class performs professional level social work by providing intensive social work services in serious and complicated cases which require the flexible use of a wide range of social work skills. Work involves investigating alleged neglect or abuse; in-depth assessment of family dynamics and needs; assessment and treatment of patients and/or families with acute to severe medical and/or emotional disorders and mental illnesses; and serving as an expert witness at court hearings (Department of Social Services). Work involves decreasing infant mortality by offering education and support services to high-risk pregnant women and their families; delivering advanced social work activities for complex case referrals involving a highly vulnerable client population with difficult psychosocial issues; and building community capacity to assist individual families and groups in preventing and alleviating social problems through social change. (Public Health). Work is distinguished from the Social Worker II classification by the greater involvement in sensitive and traumatic situations such as custody and removal of client from homes, catastrophic and terminal illness, and therapy/treatment of emotional disorders and/or family dysfunction. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by observation, in discussions, and through review of reports and case records.

There may be occasions with the Social Worker will have to work after 5:00pm to meet the needs of the families.

The Child Protective Services (CPS)/After Hours Unit hours of work is on a rotating schedule Monday-Fridays 4:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.; Monday-Friday 12:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m.; 12 hour shifts on weekends; as well as provide coverage during holidays.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in social work (MSW) from an accredited school of social work or;
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) from an accredited school of social work and completion of the Child Welfare Collaborative (Child Welfare positions only) or;
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) from an accredited school of social work and one year directly related experience or;
  • Master’s degree in counseling in a human services field and one year of social work or counseling experience or;
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field from an accredited college or university and two years of directly related experience or;
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and three years of directly related experience.

HIRING RATE FOR WORK AGAINST: $22.77 or $47,359.96/annually
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess, evaluate, and monitor services to families and children in Forsyth County.
  • Provides counseling to alleviate family crises or improve behavior problems and mental health.
  • Communicate and interact appropriately with customers during evaluations and collaborate with other agencies in an effort to provide quality services.
  • Performs professional level social work by providing intensive social work services in serious and complicated cases that require the flexible use of a wide range of social work skills.
  • Performs investigations and in-depth assessments of family dynamics and needs for cases involving protective services, custody, and adoptions; i.e. alleged neglect or abuse.
  • Performs complex psychiatric assessment and independent selection and use of varied in-depth therapies in the treatment of patients with various acute/severe mental or emotional disorders and related community liaison and education.
  • Document all activities in service records.
  • Provide updates to internal and external clients.
  • Serves as an expert witness at court hearings, crisis intervention and counseling. Requires understanding and the ability to utilize and follow all Federal, State, local laws, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Requires independent decision making, assessment skills, professional judgment, intercommunity collaboration, and knowledge of local resources. The person in this role must be able to effectively communicate with a variety of persons from various socioeconomic backgrounds and a variety of mental capabilities.
