Job Description:

The Division of Infectious Diseases & Global Medicine is seeking highly motivated applicants for a Laboratory Technician II position within the laboratory of Dr. Shannon Moonah. This position will work closely with other members of the research team including scientists and students investigating molecular parasitology, intestinal inflammation, and repair.

This position requires a strong focus on research and related activities and will include the development and execution of biological assays (e.g. protein expression, molecular cloning, ELISAs, sample preparation for flow cytometry, PCR, Western blots, and immunoprecipitation techniques). Training to perform these assays will be available to those unfamiliar with these techniques. In addition, care and use of laboratory animals, careful record-keeping, data analysis, and communication of results will be required. This position will also require a minimal amount of administrative effort, including ordering products and equipment, shipping, and helping to maintain a lab that is compliant with the standards of the University of Florida. Most importantly, a strong work ethic, ability to work as a team, and excellent hands-on skills are required.

Essential Functions;

Laboratory Technician Duties. Responsibilities include sample preparation and execution of biological assays (PCR, ELISAs, western blot, molecular, flow cytometry, cell / tissue culture). Candidates will have some familiarity with general biological principles, but specific knowledge of the relevant assays is not required to apply. Maintenance of a complete laboratory notebook is required.

Animal Husbandry. Help maintain mouse breeding colonies and assist with animal experiments.

Train Laboratory Personnel. After successful completion of an assay, the candidate may be required to train others in the laboratory to perform these same assays or otherwise aid other individuals in the lab. Instruct less experienced personnel on laboratory policies and safety regulations.

Administrative / Clerical Support Duties. Responsibilities include ordering merchandise, bookkeeping, and coordinating national and international shipping efforts. The candidate will also ensure that the lab is in compliance with University of Florida laboratory standards. This will encompass the development of standard operating procedures for the handling of chemicals; chemical waste disposal; the ordering of safety equipment and supplies; the development and maintenance of protocols for animal models; and handling of biological waste.

Collaborative Science. Attend weekly lab meetings. Liaison with visiting professors/researchers and develop excellent communications with collaborators.

Expected Salary:

$15.87 – $18.00

Minimum Requirements:

Associate degree in an appropriate area and two years of related experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred applicant will have a degree in biology or a related field and 1+ years of experience in a laboratory environment.
