Purpose and Scope of Job:
Utilize mechanical skills to complete design task related to industrial gearboxes. A significant portion will be reverse engineering competitor gearboxes and parts. Understanding manufacturing capabilities during the design and ability to efficiently provide the production and scheduling group with manufacturing drawings and full work scope.
Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):
- Understand engineering principles that apply to gear box analysis and design.
- Learn LUFTEX design and analysis methodology using provided design guides and software.
- Analyze customer gearboxes systems as a whole. Everything from gears and pinions to complete lubrication systems that supply oil to that gearbox.
- Ability to read and understand technical manufacturing drawings and customer supplied layout documentation.
- Remain cost conscious when creating BOM (Bill of Materials) for jobs.
- Learn and become proficient with SMA OEM standards for Hansen and Paramax products.
- Ability to use measuring instruments such as internal and external micrometers.
- Ability to navigate stressful emergency orders for customers through swift and clear problem solving.
- Work in the manufacturing shop to review design features of a gearbox received.
- Document and/or discuss any strengths or weakness that are apparent in the design.
- Create hand sketches to reverse engineer a part.
- Work with customers on-site discussing solutions for problematic equipment.
- Work as an individual or as part of a team on projects.
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD software such as Inventor.
- Communicate and resolve issues with our engineering team, vendor and customers.
- Learn to evaluate disposition of non-conforming parts
- Use critical thinking to develop solutions
- Provide technical support for Sales Team
- Travel within SMA’s footprint to provide technical support; as needed
- Ability to read customer specifications and create a plan to meet expectations or identify exceptions
- Work with Quality and Manufacturing to develop and continuously improve processes and quality
- Attend internal business meetings to have knowledge of current financial position and goals
- Occasionally work non-standard hours to support a customer dealing with a time sensitive repair
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in mechanical engineering or design discipline or equivalent work experience and/or 2 Years Engineering Department experience
- Two (2) Years mechanical design experience
- Two (2) Years Autocad experience (Autodesk Inventor preferred)
