Job Summary/Basic Function:
The primary role of this position is to provide outstanding advising and programming for undergraduate students across all majors and all years expressing an interest in law school and careers in law, as well as in related professions commonly pursued by students with interests in public service and social impact work. This includes but is not limited to work in government, policy, foreign relations, international development, NGOs, elected office, and social justice.
Department Overview:
The School of Public Service seeks a career advisor who has personal experience with the process of preparing for law school and has career advising experience. This is a new position for the School of Public Service, so also requires an entrepreneurial drive with a passion for student success.
Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry-level professionals and/or support employees.
Essential Functions:
60% of Time the Pre-Law and Career Advisor must:

  • Provide counseling, coaching, and facilitation of career-related one-on-one appointments, presentations, and workshops. This requires formal training in career counseling theory and practice, test assessment, and in-depth knowledge of career information and career trends.
  • Conducts individual and group/class sessions with students and alumni providing interest and skill assessment, values clarification, career opportunity/trend information, and counseling.
  • Engages students in career exploration early and throughout their academic career.
  • Promote experiential learning opportunities with the goal of transforming the students’ university experience.
  • Advise, teach, and prepare students and alumni individually and/or in workshops on resumes, cover letters, applications, job search techniques, interview skills, networking, internet usage, employer research, graduate/professional school research and application, and evaluation of job offers.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to students with respect to individual job search skills.
  • Ensure accurate data entry and reporting of all activity into the career development database, including counseling notes and outreach career activity.

35% of Time the Pre-Law and Career Advisor must:

  • Collaborate with SPS programs and faculty teaching in the Legal Studies minor to connect students with these classroom opportunities to explore their interests in law.
  • Develop collaborations on campus with career services and academic advising.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with and collaborate with the admissions office regarding outreach to prospective pre-law students.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with law/graduate schools, the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC), the Western Association of Pre-Law Advisors (WAPLA), the University of Idaho College of Law, Boise State University alumni, University Advancement, and related employers.
  • Explore Boise State’s readiness to become a LawReady undergraduate program to partner with the University of Idaho.
  • Assist with general advising for SPS students during summer orientation sessions and possibly during peak registration periods.
  • Develop and collect assessment and evaluation metrics for programmatic outcomes

5% of Time the Pre-Law and Career Advisor must:

  • Perform duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus 2 years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • J.D. or graduate degree in a relevant field
  • Two or more years of pre-professional or career advising

Salary and Benefits:
Salary ranges from $50,000 to $56,000 and is commensurate with experience.
