The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Job Description
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking mechanical engineers to join the Submarine Secondary Acoustics group. This position offers experience in testing, fleet support, and development work in the acoustic community to support current and future fleet. As an advanced engineer, you will be responsible for your own cognizant areas but also be supported by a team including more experienced engineers and advisors. You will be able to improve your skills through challenging work assignments, mentoring, and in-house training programs. Specific responsibilities may include: analysis and interface with vendors on product acceptability, design of secondary plant systems for COLUMBIA Class and future fast attack submarine, resolution of fleet and new construction noise related issues, qualification as a noise test engineer and the testing of plant components and systems, and the development of advanced noise quieting technologies. Responsibilities will include analysis and documentation of design submittals, execution of testing and reporting of results, and research and documentation of new acoustic technologies.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
BS degree in engineering or Bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university required.
Preferred Skills
- Ability to handle multiple assignments.
- Previous experience in acoustics is not required, but desired.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication will be essential in the candidates ability to contribute effectively in a teaming environment.
- Strong written communication skills with an ability to articulate technical ideas in a clear and concise manner.

Pay Range
$64,500 – $96,700 annually
