The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. Job Description

This position is for an entry level Nuclear Reactor Protection Engineer that will perform reactor protection analyses in support of the FORD Class Aircraft Carrier fleet. The selected candidate will join a multidisciplinary reactor engineering team that is responsible for routine and emergent support of the FORD Class; this includes performing routine reactor system performance analyses, responding to emergent FORD Class fleet issues, and developing reactor performance improvements.

The selected candidate will be expected to learn reactor protection analysis codes and tools used for reactor performance analyses, prepare and execute analyses using computing systems, evaluate analysis results, and make determinations regarding reactor performance and reactor plant operations. Additionally, the selected candidate will be expected to interface with stakeholders across different technical disciplines as well as clearly document and present analytical results and technical recommendations.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university required.

Preferred Skills

  • Preferred degree in Nuclear Engineering
  • Background (academic and/or professional) in nuclear reactor design and analysis
  • Strong initiative to learn and apply new skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python

Pay Range

$64,500 – $96,700 annually
