Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a mechanical, electromechanical, or multi-disciplined engineer to join the Lifting & Handling Engineering team at the Kesselring Site in West Milton, NY.

The Lifting & Handling Engineer provides technical support and oversight for all aspects of weight handling including procurement, inspection, testing, certification, maintenance, and operation of cranes and other weight handling equipment. The Lifting & Handling Engineer often works in the field responding to crane breakdowns, planning crane and rigging operations, and overseeing maintenance/operations. Other duties include:

  • Development and approval of technical procedures for the execution of maintenance, inspection, repair, and testing of cranes and other weight handling equipment
  • Technical resolution of weight handling equipment deficiencies
  • Development and approval of rigging plans/sketches
  • Documentation of weight handling equipment configuration changes
  • Development of technical specifications for the procurement of cranes and weight handling equipment
  • Writing technical correspondence to the Navy Crane Center and Naval Reactors

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or; MS degree in engineering or Master’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience or; Currently or previously EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program or SRE Qualification

Preferred Skills

The Lifting & Handling Engineering team is fully committed to developing the right motivated engineer with little direct weight handling experience; however, the following skills and experience would be preferred:

  • Demonstrated communication and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to team with other engineers and production personnel
  • Previous experience with weight handling (crane and/or rigging operations)
  • Previous experience maintaining large industrial electromechanical machines
  • Previous experience maintaining large industrial hydraulic equipment
  • Previous experience with ASME B.30 and/or NAVFAC P-307 standards

Pay Range

$73,000 – $109,600 annually
