Description
** HIRING BONUS up to $5,000 **
Performs specialized emergency radio and communications work, serving as a dispatcher on an assigned shift for the York-Poquoson-Williamsburg Regional Communications Center. Receives incoming calls on both non-emergency and emergency 911 lines; dispatches applicable personnel. Operates a computer terminal connected to the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Dispatches units or representatives from public safety and other areas such as law enforcement, fire and life safety, animal control, public utilities, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent, with at least one year of work involving customer service; or any equivalent combination and experience.
Must successfully complete the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Dispatcher Academy and have the ability to obtain VCIN/NCIC certification, Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification, and complete in-house Communications Officer I training within prescribed timeframes.
Requires strong attention to detail and the ability to speak clearly/concisely, and to understand and follow directions.
Requires the ability to type a minimum of 40 WPM with a considerable degree of accuracy.
Some knowledge of personal computers and related software required
Must be willing to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Supplemental Information
Qualified applicants will be given a typing and qualification test, and must be willing to undergo a detailed background review.
This position is considered to be essential (County designation as ALPHA). In the event of an emergency/inclement weather conditions, the incumbent is expected to remain at the worksite or to report to worksite in accordance with the department’s standard operating procedures, or as notified by a supervisor.
Must reside within a sixty-minute response time from York County.
Physical Demands
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computer terminals, radios, copiers, etc. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
