Position Summary:
Founded in 2017 with a $200 million gift from Orange County philanthropists Susan and Henry Samueli, UCI Health Affairs is a first of its kind health science enterprise and is unique to Orange County, Calif. Together, the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences and UCI Health form UCI Health Affairs. Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences is translating our tripartite mission to “discover, teach, heal,” into the diverse healthcare workforce of the future and groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Creating a first-of-its-kind alliance across health disciplines, the college comprises the School of Medicine, the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, the recently launched School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, the future School of Population & Public Health (scheduled to be accredited in 2021), the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, and research units focused on cancer, clinical translational science, precision health and stem cells. The college shares a robust synergy with UCI Health, the only academic health system in Orange County. Under the general supervision of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs (VCHA) Executive Director of Communications and External Relations, the Sr. Communications Specialist is a key member of the VCHA’s communications team and is tasked with executing a comprehensive communications program, writing strategic communications pieces, executive communication, internal communication, Op-Eds, presentations, and speeches. This person will support the Executive Director of Communications and External Relations and other leadership. The Sr. Communications Specialist independently oversees and executes a comprehensive communications program with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Designs and implements information campaigns. Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives. Involves conceiving, researching, writing, editing, and / or publishing written materials and strategic communications, including publications (e.g. annual reviews), articles, proposals, presentations, speeches, website copy, and promotional material.

Required:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working in communications or related job.
- Experience working in a healthcare organization preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
- Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.

- Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
- Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences. Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
- Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
