Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains child, parent and center records.
  2. Assists with supervision and guided direction of Early Childhood Education students working and training in the center.
  3. Models appropriate practitioner behavior for Early childhood students working and training in the center,
  4. Serves as an early childhood teacher to provide routine physical care, supervision, and education to a group of children.
  5. Performs multiple duties in connection with the center and classroom operation of the Hawai’i Community College Children’s Center.
  6. Supervises, assists, and educates children in their daily routine by helping children for lunch, naptime, hand washing, tooth brushing, toileting, etc.
  7. Plans and implements developmentally appropriate activities for a group of children.
  8. Assists in curriculum development and planning for the center.
  9. Assists children with special need in routines as needed.
  10. Supervises children during outdoor play.
  11. Assists with the learning environment preparation and care.
  12. Assists with communication to families.
  13. Maintain records by assisting in recording attendance and maintaining snacks and meal records and assists in filing for USDA reimbursements.
  14. Assist with supplies and materials in Center including requisitions and purchase orders.
  15. Performs office tasks, answers phone, takes messages, etc.
  16. Assist with development of the center newsletter.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for working with young children; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in early childhood education and child development demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  3. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with DHS Child Care Licensing Rules and Regulations.
  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of early childhood education and child development.
  5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Knowledge of young children’s development, characteristics and behavior patterns.
  9. Knowledge of practices and procedures in caring for, guiding and establishing rapport with young children.
  10. Ability to sensitively relate to young children, their parents, staff and early childhood students in a learning and training environment.
  11. Knowledgeable of principles, methods and practices of early childhood education and child development.
  12. Ability to meet the State of Hawaii Department of Human Services licensing/staffing requirements.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Associate in Science Degree in Early Childhood from an accredited two-year college.
  2. Experience and specialized training in infant and toddler development and care.
  3. Experience working with volunteers and students in a training setting.
  4. Familiar with The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards and accreditation.
  5. Demonstrated commitment and/or experience promoting equity and a diverse workforce/academic environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment and/or experience supporting the success of students.
