General Description: The purpose of this position is to provide information relative to crime patterns and trend correlation to aid in the prevention, suppression and resolution of criminal activity. The class is responsible for collecting, analyzing and disseminating crime data. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Organization: The Crime Analyst position is part of Hanover County’s Career Development Program (CD). The Crime Analyst Ladder has three (3) levels ranging from Crime Analyst I to Crime Analyst III. Incumbents report directly to the Lieutenant of Crime Intelligence and supervise no staff.
Duties:
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Collect, correlate and analyze crime data to identify existing and developing crime patterns.
- Generate and distribute reports on findings to aid administrative and operational personnel planning the deployment of resources for the prevention and suppression of criminal activity, aiding the investigative process, increasing apprehensions and the clearance of cases.
- Assist in case development and resolution by analysis of data or information to discover facts, or developing knowledge or interpretations.
- Create charts, graphs, maps and spreadsheets with coordinated or determined time, place or sequence of criminal operations or activities based on analysis of data or information.
- Conduct research and analysis. (SARA Model)
- Effective written and oral communication skills, to include public speaking.
- Maintain and query databases.
- Attend meetings and conferences.
- Coordinate the production and distribution of maps and data.
- Assist in support of GIS application development using standard GIS software tools.
- Provide technical support to GIS users, including training
- Use GIS software for spatial analysis, risk terrain modeling and predictive modeling.

- Work is typically performed in an office environment. So local travel is required.
- Physical Effort
- Must be able to perform the following physical activities: standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Must be physically able to lift up to 40 pounds. Must be able to reach overhead and bend down to retrieve items and documents from various locations. Must be able to climb ladders and/or step stools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to analyze user needs, report findings, and provide recommendations with minimal direction, required. Effective oral and written communication skills. Must have in-depth knowledge of computer systems and be familiar with Incident-Based Reporting. Proficient in the use of Global Information Systems (GIS) and related maps and queries. Proficient in the utilization of Microsoft Office Applications and records management policies. Knowledge of other software systems and programming languages, such as ArcGIS software, AutoCAD software, Microsoft Office, Windows Operating Systems, and SQL relational database required.
Education, Experience and Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Crime Analysis or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferred or a combination of equivalent experience and/or education. Requires minimum of one year working with computers, one year of clerical or research and analysis experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification. Preferred experience with GIS or computer science. (Experience with ArcGIS and Crime Analysis software desired). No special certification or license required.
