About Us
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Chemistry Lab Technician
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory, Bettis Test Programs has an opening for a senior Applied Technology Technician possessing a background in chemistry operations. The successful candidate will operate a state of the art chemistry analysis lab and may be called upon to construct, install, maintain, repair, troubleshoot and operate mechanical/hydraulic test equipment in a test facility. Specific responsibilities may include:
- Operate 6 Ion Chromatography (IC) instruments which include operating an autosampler, Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) instruments which include operating an auto sampler, Total Organic Carbon instrument, Autotitrator, pH and conductivity meters
- Functional understanding and operations of LIMS and Chromeleon
- Test lab operations consist of preparing chemical solutions (formulations, dilutions etc), tracking/inventorying chemicals and disposal of generated waste
- Responsible for inventory and control of more than 300 chemicals
- Coordinate with test sponsors to determine priority of sampling
- Operate multiple test stations independently and concurrently while maintaining a safe work environment
- Work closely with peers, engineers, contractors, maintenance personnel, and management to operate and maintain lab equipment, facility, and local infrastructure
- Monitor data acquisition during routine facility operation, interpret instrument readings, and verify and assure that facility operation is in accordance with documented test plans, test procedures, and facility operating procedures
- Assemble and install complex mechanical/hydraulic test equipment and/or special equipment to achieve the desired operating conditions
- Proactively recognize and take action to resolve deficiencies
- Troubleshoot abnormalities with test hardware and proactively suggest corrective actions to management in the absence of engineering support
- Once qualified, train and mentor other technicians and engineers on the operation of test hardware within the employee’s work location
- Perform work tasks proactively with minimal oversight
- Ability to qualify lock out tag out and other qualifications needed to perform job requirements as directed by management
- Other duties as assigned by management
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of ten years of relevant experience or; Associate degree in a related field or Journeyman’s Papers and a minimum of six years of relevant experience or Bachelor degree in a related field and a minimum of two years of relevant experience
Preferred Skills
- Degree or work experience in chemistry operations or related field
- Experience operating ion chromatography instruments and ability to understand the results
- Experience working in a chemistry lab environment
- Ability to work independently and effectively on a variety of complex tasks
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment during operation and for routine preventative maintenance
- Proficient in word, excel and other microsoft operating programs
- Work from drawings, sketches, verbal instructions, and technical manuals

Pay Range
$62,200 – $93,200 annually
