Director of Media Operations

The Opportunity

We’re hiring a Director of Media Operations! This person will help our Media Operations team grow and evolve with the freedom to stamp their uniqueness on how we do this work. In this role you’ll be supervising an incredible team including the Media Operations Manager and the Media Archivist. Position Details

The Director of Media Operations defines short and long-term strategic priorities to achieve continuous improvement in tactical execution for Media Operations, Archival services, Traffic Operations support, and MAM governance support operations. They will possess strong interpersonal skills allowing them to work collaboratively across departments to proactively solve problems, build consensus, and deliver critical projects and services on time and on budget. The Director of Media Operations acts as part of the Media Asset Management (MAM) governance committee, coordinating with the Media Operations team, the Manager of Content Support, the Production Resource Manager, the Archivist and others in Content to approve, design and configure efficient and standardized media workflows and processes across all of OPB’s content creation and distribution systems.

Responsibilities

70% – Lead Media Operations team

  • Ensure operational and technical efficiency within Media Operations team
  • Audit training programs to ensure they are updated and maintained
  • Monitor appropriate routine and preventive maintenance activities
  • Create and manage systems to gather data to be used in reports and as indicators for future planning
  • Delegate work responsibilities throughout the Media Operations team ensuring equal access to opportunities
  • Set goals, timelines, and milestones and follow progress for evolution and continuous improvement
  • Ensure professional development opportunities are budgeted, available and accessible for all on the team
  • Develop and track team continuous improvement plans offering coaching and feedback on a regular basis
  • Develop long term goals and action plans to ensure smooth implementation of various technologies in support of content acquisition, storage, and delivery
  • Contribute to organization-wide short and long-range Media Operations planning, including establishing technical standards, methods and priorities
  • Actively participate in skill enhancement opportunities

25% – Organizational leadership

  • Create and manage annual operating budget and submit capital budget requests
  • Serve as a part of the Technology Leadership Team and assist other administrative activities related to meeting departmental goals
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with key contacts in the public media and commercial communities to build a network of industry experts
  • Serve on various OPB internal committees and teams including but not limited to: the Equity Team, various IT/data teams, or special project teams.
  • Champion organizational initiatives such as DEI trainings and tools
  • Follow industry trends and stay abreast of advancements that would help OPB stay innovative
  • Seek out and create opportunities for knowledge sharing across teams
  • Ensure senior leadership is apprised of system successes and needs
  • Research and recommend new approaches and processes to improve efficiency of the media supply chain
  • Develop and maintain succession plan for team, that stays in alignment with OPB priorities. Lead the transition in Media Operations to align workstreams with OPB priorities and business needs
  • Plans, assigns, and approves work; responds to grievances; disciplines/rewards; recommends hiring; hires; recommends salary adjustments; and prepares and signs performance reviews.
  • Serves as and is backup for the Media Asset Management (MAM) support team

5% – Other duties as assigned

  • Assist in any other media operations work or activities as directed.
  • Contribute to leading the technology department as part of the technology leadership team

Working Conditions

This position has a flexible hybrid onsite/remote work schedule in typical office conditions with workday hours, Monday through Friday. The position may be required to work after hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays to manage urgent system and service outages.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of professional experience
  • Demonstrated strong supervisory, management and interpersonal skills, including the ability to lead others through the challenging evolution of media technology, processes, and workflows.
  • Proficient with content management, workflow, and process development for a media organization.
  • Demonstrated experience being a creative and visionary leader operating in a change-oriented environment.
  • Ability to lead teams in thinking outside of the box, developing creative and viable solutions, and driving implementation
  • Demonstrated experience effectively setting and accomplishing goals while managing projects, budgets, and dynamic priorities.
  • Demonstrated experienced managing programs, maintaining standards, and optimizing processes and workflows.
  • Ability to appropriately and professionally represent OPB in the community and interact with co-workers and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Enthusiasm for the services and mission of Oregon Public Broadcasting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies, Film/TV, Communications/Journalism
  • Experience managing master control operations
  • Experience managing Archival Services at a media company
  • Experience managing Media Asset Management and media distribution channels

Additional Information

  • This position reports to the VP of Technology and is benefits eligible.
  • The probable hiring range for this exempt position is between $87,000 – 97,000 annually, depending on qualifications.
