The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. The NNL Reactor Physics group is looking for a nuclear physicist to join their team. Joining this team, you will have an opportunity to develop and evaluate nuclear data in support of generating nuclear data libraries, while working at a university electron linear accelerator laboratory directly with staff and graduate students on cutting edge research. The Reactor Physics nuclear data team measures, analyzes, and develops nuclear data libraries for particle transport codes to solve engineering problems on modern high-performance computing platforms. Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
- MS degree in Nuclear Engineering or Engineering Physics from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
- PhD in Nuclear Engineering or Engineering Physics from an accredited college or university
Preferred Skills
- Strong background in nuclear physics and understanding of neutron-nucleus interaction theory
- Experience generating resolved resonance and unresolved resonance parameters from experimental data
- Experience generating, testing, and validating evaluated nuclear data files and nuclear data libraries
- Demonstrated abilities in technical writing and presentation of technical material
- Experience with nuclear parameter fitting codes, such as SAMMY and REFIT
- Experience with nuclear theory codes, such as EMPIRE and TALYS
- Experience with nuclear data processing codes such as NJOY, AMPX, and PREPRO
- Familiarity using ENDF-6 and GNDS formats
- Experience developing scientific software in a team environment
- Experience with FORTRAN, C++, Python, Unix/Linux, and other programming/scripting languages

Pay Range
$82,600 – $123,800 annually
