Department Description Department Purpose

Strategic Communications provides comprehensive and coordinated campus leadership in planning, creating and implementing integrated marketing and communications programs across all media that foster increased awareness, understanding and support of UC Davis’ mission, vision, accomplishments and needs among its many internal and external constituencies. It serves
as the official voice of UC Davis to regional, state, national and international news media.
Strategic Communications encompasses six units: Visual Communications, News and Media Relations, Web Communications, Social Media, Marketing and Branding, and Executive Communications. Strategic Communications’ multimedia storytellers, designers, Web developers, information architects and search-engine experts have a mission to communicate university messages through interactive media. We coordinate these communications across platforms to reach our audiences. Our efforts could be seen on the UC Davis home site, Discord, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube and other sites and channels.”

Job Summary

Under direction of the Director of Social Media in the Strategic Communications Department, the Social Media Manager for Undergraduate Admissions will be responsible for the overall social media strategy and execute digital content, programs and campaigns specifically in support of undergraduate admissions outreach, recruitment and yield efforts to enroll new undergraduate students. This position will work in a highly collaborative environment in close coordination with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Strategic Communications in the development and execution of an overall student recruitment social media strategy that integrates with the overall marketing strategy and aligns with admissions priorities and best practices.

Manage content development, engagement strategies and community management of all Undergraduate Admissions digital channels (e.g. Instagram, TikTok, Discord),including daily posting activities and monitoring of performance. Coordinate with the UC Davis social media team for integrated efforts across main campus channels. Assist the Director in developing tracking of social media performance results. Responsible ongoing performance monitoring, reporting, and tactical adjustments as necessary to meet stated objectives. Lead social media ad placements, manage the ad budget spends and strategy and report results. Collaborate with the market analyst for best results and optimization. Work with the UC Davis social media team to maintain a University social media group for sharing of best practices, general coordination and ongoing social media training. Stay current with changes in traditional and social media to deliver innovative programming and continually evolve social media activities. Experiment with new and alternative ways to leverage social media activities.

  • Work flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends to respond to operational needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS/BA degree in advertising, communications, marketing, public relations, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • At minimum 5 years demonstrated experience building social media strategic plans, organizing projects and teams and executing strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize and make adjustments as priorities shift. Skill set to create the plan, organization skills and ability to prioritize in an ever shifting environment.
  • Experience analyzing and reporting performance in various social media channels, and making necessary adjustments and optimizations in order to meet stated objectives.
  • Experience placing social media ad buys on platforms such as Facebook or Instagram and TikTok including targeting and results interpretation.
  • Experience using interpersonal, strong verbal, writing, and editing skills to effectively communicate and develop relationships with internal stakeholders in order to develop a steady stream of inbound story ideas, coordinate projects as well as influence social media activities in other departments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of social media channels and their respective participants (Discord, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, etc.), and how to best utilize each channel. This includes monitoring conversations and trends in social media, assessing opportunities for, and threats to, the advancement of a brand’s reputation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience maintaining an editorial calendar for multiple social media channels, creating and identifying quality social media content related to a variety of student, academic and research topics.
  • Experience applying judgment and discretion when working with highly sensitive and confidential information.
  • General knowledge of digital audio and video recording equipment, experience operating such equipment and experience with digital audio and video editing software.
  • An understanding of undergraduate admissions cycles and processes.
