Principal Content Designer

Content Designers are the voice of Microsoft Teams. They craft intuitive, inspiring communication everywhere people engage with Teams. They collaborate closely with product managers, designers, researchers, data scientists, and others to imagine, design, test, and deliver Teams features and experiences that connect hundreds of millions of people around the globe.

We’re looking for a Principal Content Designer to do scalable strategic work – like editorial strategy, naming, content patterns, hierarchies, audits , AI-specific messaging frameworks , and prompt engineering – to make it easy for people to connect and collaborate in safe and authentic ways.

This role focuses mainly on the following areas:

Copilot is the AI chat capability Microsoft is developing for Teams and other Microsoft products. You’ll work on a multidisciplinary design team to co-create the Copilot product experience, collaborating with Teams content designers, interaction designers, visual designers, researchers, data scientists, engineers, and product managers to help shape the Copilot User Experience (UX) from conception to launch. As a Principal Content Designer for the Microsoft AI experience, you will lead and coordinate the Teams’ strategy with other partners to maintain a consistent experience throughout our products.

The Growth and Onboardin g team is focused on developing engaging and intriguing consumer experi ences on Teams for our users, especially for those already using our enterprise products. You’ll work on a multi- disciplinary product developm ent team focusing on Team’s differentiated features throughout the product lifecycle and develop inspiring experiences to acquire , engage , and retain users through meaningful and relevant collaboration and connection .

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Visual Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 6+ years experience working in product or service design, copywriting, technical writing, writing (e.g. for marketing, advertising, e-commerce), brand design, or brand marketing
    • OR a Master’s Degree in Arts, Digital Communications, UX Design, Human Computer Interaction, Communications, English, Journalism, or related field AND 4+ years experience working in product or service design, copywriting, technical writing, writing (e.g. for marketing, advertising, e-commerce), brand design, or brand marketing
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of UX, technology, and the role language plays in design.
  • Experience in product UX/content design for consumer app s
  • Experience in UX design fundamentals and the creative development process
  • Ability to develop UX from the customer ‘s point of view
  • Uses data to drive decisions and measure success
  • Experience planning and executing work with minimal support
  • An evangelist of brand, voice, style, and UX standards among partner teams to raise content and product quality
  • Adept at prioritization in agile workflo ws
  • Experience influencing up to leadership and across design teams for impact
  • A changemaker and possess a decisive bias toward action
  • Understanding of how to develop content strategies and socialize with stakeholders
  • Experience developing complex information architecture designs
  • Experience in developing and rolling out brand voice and style guidelines
  • Experience in Content Design basics, including:
    • Designing for s cenarios and personas
    • Mapping user journeys and UX flows
    • Research and usability testing
    • Product positioning and messaging
    • Terminology research, formulation, and rationalization
    • Naming and nomenclature systems
    • Experience with prompt engineering/creation
  • Experience in creating AI-specific frameworks (conversational AI responses to user inputs and prompts)
  • Familiar with large language models (LLMs)

Content Design IC5 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 – $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 – $282,200 per year.

  • Create frameworks that others can use to write clear and consistent product content
  • Define content strategy for launches and features
  • Test and optimize content
  • Coordinate with Product, Brand, Marketing, and other partner teams as needed to ensure a consistent customer experience within Teams and across other Microsoft products
  • Drive and document style conventions to help Team s content designers and other s write faster and more consistently

Craft

  • Develop new UX writing standards and frameworks and help evolve existing ones
  • Collaborate with designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers to define requirements against core user journeys
  • Help develop UX concepts or early-stage experiences.
  • Weave user insights, engineering constraints, business needs, and platform constraints into your proposals
  • Think holistically to create a diverse set of writing and content design solutions with a deep understanding of user needs
  • Manage multiple projects and stakeholders, prioritizing against tight deadlines
  • Provide data-informed insights to improve existing experiences

  • Advocate for user needs with P roduct , even in the face of business needs .
  • Formulate UX content design hypotheses and update your work based on UX research r eports
