The Position

The City of Beaverton is seeking an Assistant City Attorney to support the City Attorney, other senior attorneys, and prosecutors in providing legal advice and representation to the city and its council, city manager, department heads, and staff related to specific services or functions as assigned.

This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy. The classification is Assistant City Attorney 1.

Responsibilities

  1. Review claims against the city, research the background of the claim and recommend course of action to resolve it.
  2. Assist in litigation of federal, state, and local civil claims at trial and on appeal, including arbitrations, mediations, and administrative contested cases.
  3. Study, research, interpret and apply statutes, ordinances, court decisions and legal opinions in the preparation of opinions, briefs and cases.
  4. Prosecute criminal and non-criminal cases predominantly in the Beaverton Municipal Court.
  5. Review police reports and charge appropriate offenses.
  6. Draft motions and responses to motions, and research and write legal memoranda.
  7. Coordinate responses to civil and criminal discovery requests, public records requests, and subpoena duces tecum.

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:

  • Law degree from a fully-accredited law school or an equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar.

Licensing and special requirements

  • Valid drivers’ license and the ability to meet the city’s driving standards; or an acceptable alternative means of transportation to attend work and meetings.
  • Ability to obtain Oregon Criminal Justice Information Services security clearance.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check, including fingerprints.
  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.

Compensation
Wage range: $6,731.15 – $9,021.29 monthly
Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
