Job Description

The incumbent will participate in all aspects of the Fisheries-Independent Monitoring program. Primary duties include coordinating and leading routine maintenance and repair on a small fleet of vehicles (~10), vessels (~7), boat engines, boat trailers, and associated equipment. Overseeing and maintaining a clean, organized, and functional workshop and warehouse, constructing and repairing field sampling gear (e.g., mending nets) and equipment, tracking and documenting work completed on state equipment, and assisting with purchasing as needed. Secondary duties include, participating in field sampling activities following strict protocols; entering, proofing, and correcting associated data to ensure accuracy; participating in public outreach events and assisting with other Fish and Wildlife Research Institute programs, as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have working knowledge necessary to accomplish routine marine equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Must be able to work on marine, land based mechanical and electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Must be able to diagnosis and repair a wide variety of electronic/electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Must possess basic computer and administrative skills to complete reports in a timely manner.
  • Must be an effective communicator, be able to work independently, and as a member of a team.
  • Must be able to trailer and operate vessels less than 26′ in length.

Knowledge, Skill(s), and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and techniques required to accomplish routine marine equipment repair. Ability to work on marine and land based mechanical and electronic/electrical equipment. Must display knowledge of a wide variety of electronic/electrical and mechanical equipment diagnosis and repair skills. Skilled in the use of the tools and equipment used in electronic/electrical and mechanical equipment repairs. Ability to follow instructions and complete work assignments issued by supervisor. Ability to maintain a clean, neat, and safe workstation. Ability to perform strenuous field duties in adverse conditions (e.g. inclement weather, rough water, boat engine exhaust, shoreline wading); to safely operate and trailer vessels less than 26′ in length; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to work both independently and on a team; work hours in excess of 40 per week; maintain a valid driver’s license; and complete a boater safety course within probation period. Computer and administrative skills necessary to complete reports in a timely manner.
