Job Overview

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC Live Spindle Vertical Turning Center, Gear Hobbing/Splining Machine and CNC Gear Hobber Gashing Machine performing all machining operations.
  • Reviews Schedule on Cell PC (Computer) and determines next jobs to run and sequence. Secures drawing and program package including programming master, calls up program from control files, setup instructions, tooling list, etc. Determine sequence of operations, preset tools, load them in tool changer, spindle head, as specified, edits program manually as required.
  • Performs close tolerance machining operations including but not limited to… turning, drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, counter boring, spot facing, milling, shaping, (Internal and External) Gashing, surface grinding, etc.. Manually deburrs and inspects work pieces to print tolerances using machine probe, manual inspection tools and gauges. Stamp out parts and fill out documentation as required.

Gear Hobbing/Splining Machine: Using routing and setup sheet provided in operator’s manual, machine controller, etc. Set up and operate a hobbing machine performing all spur, helical, spline and worm gear operations on assigned machine tool. Set up piece on machine, set up arbor and hob. Inputs feeds, speeds, pitch and number of teeth on control. Moves piece into place for machining, refers to setup sheet and changes arbors, etc. as required, verifies no recent engineering changes have been made, selects and mounts cutting tool as required, checks depth of cut and monitors tool wear adjusting as needed. Removes piece from machine, deburrs, cleans off chips and cutting oil and sets aside, stamping as required. Occasionally operates machine manually or under keyboard control: edits program when required. Performs external hobbing, splining, or single indexing to AGMA standards when hobbing various size spur/helical gears, shafts, pinions, etc., to size.

CNC Hobber/Gashing Machine: Operate CNC hobber/gashing machine, determine type of set up, fixtures and attachments, teeth locations, calculates spacing, pitch, fixtures and attachments, sets stroke, cutting feed and speed, depth, number of teeth, flow of coolant, and enters data into CNC User Interface on control. Set up hobbing/gashing cutters on arbors, indicating, indexing, and changing inserts as required. Perform close tolerance machining operations, such as semi finish hobbing/gashing of teeth etc., on parts such as gears, pinions, shafts, wheels, ring gears, hubs etc. Check dimensions with gauges, probe, and other precision measuring tools, manually adjusts machine and edits program as needed to machine parts within semi-finished engineering tolerances. Removes piece from machine, deburrs part, cleans out chips and cutting oil.

CNC Live Spindle Vertical Turning Center: Operate CNC vertical turning center, presets and loads tools in changer locations as specified in program, place piece on machine table manually or hitches properly and loads with a Jib crane or floor operated overhead crane, selects proper chucking jaws or fixture, aligns and indicates piece on table. Operates machine under keyboard control either CNC or manually when necessary. Uses Probe to inspect, gather data, and analyze data, then acts on results. Determines tool set length, qualifies size, location and depth, and adjust parts reference. When a mistake is found in the tape, correct tape and notifies programming department to correct master program.
