Job Description

NNL’s Fire Protection (FP) unit, at the Knolls Laboratory site, is seeking a highly motivated engineer to join our team supporting the world’s best Navy. FP provides the engineering resource to support 1) the operation and maintenance of the site’s fire protection and life safety systems, 2) ensure that new construction designs meet the applicable code requirements, and 3) ensure the appropriate records are maintained to document regulatory compliance. Our mission is to provide timely, high quality, integrated, and customer service-based engineering solutions to support the operations, maintenance, and improvement needs of the site and its workforce while ensuring that workforce has a safe working environment.

As part of the FP unit, you’ll have the opportunity to maintain site wide fire protection infrastructure, ensure reliability through a robust inspection, testing, and maintenance program, review new construction designs for system compatibility and code enforcement, perform code evaluations, make design recommendations, assess facility health in the development of fire hazard analysis, and help plan future improvements to support the future mission of the site.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Skills

  • BS degree, or higher, in a Fire Protection discipline
  • Experience with the design or maintenance of one or more fire protection systems, such as: Detection and notification systems, Water-based suppression systems, Chemical or gaseous suppression systems for special hazards, or Passive barriers and means of egress
  • Experience with the development of engineering documents (e.g. engineering analysis, technical specifications, functional requirements, cost estimates, maintenance requirements, engineering drawings, etc.)
  • Familiarity interpreting regulatory codes and standards such as International Building Code or International Fire Code, Building or Fire Code of New York State, or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, such as National Electrical Code
  • Ability to qualify as a Limited Radiation Worker

Pay Range

$82,400 – $128,800 annually
