Mechanical Engineer – ATAS – Open Rank – (Hybrid)

Project/Unit Description

The GTRI Aerospace, Transportation & Advanced Systems Laboratory develops advanced technologies and systems from concept development to prototypes. ATAS Mechanical Design Engineers perform engineering design and analysis in support of these systems, on behalf of multiple sponsored research programs. Custom, fully functional, fully integrated system hardware and full documentation are the principal deliverables for these programs, which include radar systems, state-of-the-art electronics, and advanced systems for ground-based, naval, airborne, and space applications.

This position is to fill an immediate need for a mechanical engineer to join our project teams to help develop unique components and systems, primarily for EW and RF-related deliverables. The initial emphasis will be on design and analysis of structures, electronic equipment packaging, and thermal control systems. Projects also often require work with kinematic mechanisms, dynamics, servo controls, sensor integration, machine design, hydraulics, pneumatics, fluid flow systems, HVAC, and material properties. ATAS Mechanical Design Engineers work in a continuous learning and growth environment to supplement academic knowledge in almost all subdisciplines associated with mechanical engineering.

Job Purpose

The Mechanical Engineer develops, tests, manufactures, and documents mechanical designs and packaging solutions for a wide variety of components and systems, including aeronautical, aerospace, transportation, military equipment, radar, and electronic systems. Mechanical design includes reverse engineering and redesign of mechanical assemblies and components in complex systems, evaluation of emerging technologies and products, and documentation of the design in 2D and 3D modeling toolsets. This role may create and develop unique, custom hardware from initial concepts to delivery of fully functional, integrated systems. Additional responsibilities typically include the preparation of technical data packages to specifically document mechanical specifications required to manufacture and assemble a complex assembly. Mechanical analysis and testing are performed such as thermal analysis, vibration, reliability, finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and other environmental testing. Prototyping is supported through selection of components, assembly, and testing. Mechanical engineers are familiar with industry standards, best practices, and processes and can contribute to mechanical trade studies. May require in-depth working knowledge of the mechanical properties of engineering materials, and a thorough understanding of fabrication processes and techniques.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical design and documentation using 2D and 3D modeling tools.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical data packages.
  • More advanced mechanical analysis and test such as thermal analysis, vibration, and reliability testing.
  • Perform mechanical measurements, component selection, and more significant prototyping.
  • Support assembly, and fabrication of test fixtures.
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations.
  • Contribute to white papers, and competitive proposals.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Significant additional duty (less than or equal to 50% time).
  • Accomplishes mission level modeling and simulation of long-range kill chain architectures to support acquisition decisions for Department of the Air Force PEO C3BM.
  • This includes the use of common industry M&S tools (e.g., CAMEO, SySML, AFSIM) and specialized tools (e.g., SPA ORCA’s Archer M&S suite) to model campaign level scenarios to determine optimum command and control, communications, sensing, and fires architectures.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 1-year broad-based mechanical engineering design and analysis experience across subdisciplines such as machine design, structures, kinematics, vibration, thermal systems, fluid flow, hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics packaging, or servo controls.
  • Strong working knowledge of structural material properties and machine shop fabrication processes.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard software tools for the creation of 3D CAD models and 2D drawings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience working with DoD projects including military vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, and/or ships.
  • Design, fabrication, and test experience with radar systems and/or RF communications systems.
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD and PDM software.
  • Experience in finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), steady state and transient thermal analysis, or other types of engineering analysis and simulation.
  • Hands-on experience working with machine tools or other fabrication and assembly techniques.

Travel Requirements

  • 10% – 25% travel.

Education and Length of Experience

Salary

  • $86,162 – $117,158
