Description
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County, Parks and Recreation, Natural Historical Resources Division has an opening for a part-time/Seasonal Naturalist position at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, along the scenic Anacostia River.
This is a year-round seasonal/intermittent position that requires roughly 24-32 hours per week. Hours fluctuate based on seasonal need.
Examples of Important Duties
The Part-Time Naturalist will provide interpretive and educational programs in natural history and river ecology to various groups such as schools, scouts, and the public. Conducts research and program development in various subject matters and upon approval of senior naturalist staff, will present the program with the use of various naturalist props and scientific materials. Respond to visitor, telephone, and staff inquiries concerning natural history and conservation matters. Greet visitors, provide interpretive program information, promote positive public relations for the park programs and encourage appreciation for the natural environment. Lead conservation activities with volunteers, monitor trails within the park, and maintain park’s native gardens and landscaping.
Additional duties may include rentals of boats and bikes, boat tour operations, general park maintenance, and staffing special events including set-up/tear down of events and programs.
Minimum Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in Education or Natural/Environmental Sciences, earned or in progress
- Experience working with children.
- Experience in creating and conducting environmental education programs.
- Exceptional customer service and public speaking skills. Outgoing and friendly.
- Maryland natural history and/or river ecology knowledge.
- Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors.
- Team player and able to meet deadlines
- Driver’s License
- Must be at least 18 years old.

This position does not provide benefits.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This job requires weekend work, occasional evening shifts, and holidays. Work will be both indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions. Manual labor and lifting are required for this position.

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.
If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.
Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
