Job Summary

SUMMARY

The Parks Worker performs duties in turf care, park construction projects, maintenance and Town events. Under minimal supervision, performs various turf management, park maintenance and construction tasks using hand and power operated tools; a variety of small gas/diesel powered, electrically driven, and/or hydraulically operated equipment/machinery. Drives, operates, and trains on equipment used by the Recreation & Parks Department.

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but not limited the following:

  • Responsible for overseeing the general appearance of the assigned park(s) along with maintenance and preparation of the athletic fields and recreation sites.
  • Responsible for determining, reporting, and correcting any safety hazards located in assigned park(s).
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles, machinery, mowers, tools, and equipment.
  • Responsible for laying out all types of athletic fields. This includes measuring proper dimensions, and painting of any lines for the particular sport played on that field.
  • Assists in special events preparation.
  • Responsible for planting and aftercare of flowers, shrubs and trees.
  • Responsible for pick up litter and dumping of trash receptacles.
  • Assists in set up of recreation programs.
  • Provides custodial services of maintenance building.
  • Maintains all the turf in parks and public grounds areas.
  • Assists in fertilization and pesticide program.
  • Maintains improvements in parks and public grounds areas.

Minimum Qualifications

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May be called upon to supervise other parks’ workers of an equal or lower rank.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with one (1) year of satisfactory paid employment in the operation of automotive farm equipment or trucks or equipment used in this position.

Must have experience with vehicles using pedal operated clutch and four-speed manual transmission, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supplemental Information

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to maintain accurate records, write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Basic knowledge of turf care, landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical skills are desirable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

Valid driver’s license with less than four (4) points.
