Seven-Gang Mower Operator positions operate seven-gang hydraulic riding mowers and other various mowing equipment to mow golf course fairways and parks; adjust, maintain, and repair cutting units; perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment; act as crew leader; operate large truck-trailer combinations to haul mowers and other equipment; keep mileage and service records; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

    5% effective 1/1/24

    4% effective 7/1/24

    2% effective 1/1/25

    5% effective 7/1/25

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Seven-Gang Mower Operator employees may be required to lift up to 60 pounds.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:

  1. One year of full-time experience operating and maintaining self-propelled three-reeled (triplex) ride-on mowers or higher (five- or seven-gang).
  2. Successful completion of the City’s Equipment Operation Training Program AND six months of full-time experience operating and maintaining self-propelled three-reeled (triplex) ride-on mowers or higher (five- or seven-gang).

NOTES:

  • Qualifying experience MUST include performing repair, maintenance, and adjustment of cutting units AND minor repair and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Experience driving the equipment without actually operating it to perform maintenance, repair and other intended work, is NOT qualifying.
  • If you are using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify, you must submit written documentation signed by your appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work you performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

NOTE:

  • Some positions will require a Class A Driver License a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two years at the time of hire for those driving truck-trailer combinations to haul mowers and other equipment.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and turf types with related mowing requirements.
  • Experience in towing and/or transporting equipment.

SCREENING PROCESS

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
