The Juneau Aquatics Division offers a dynamic work environment fostering creativity and program growth. Under the direction of the Aquatics Manager, this employee will work with both pool supervisors to support innovative, diverse, and engaging programs based on community needs.
The city of Juneau has a robust swim culture with exceptional community support. Our division is in an exciting phase of growing to meet community needs. Current aquatic programming, while minimal, is well supported through community interest.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
The working hours for this position fluctuate based on program needs. A majority of the working hours will occur during regular office hours (Monday through Friday) but evening and weekend work will be required based on program needs. Your office would be located at Dimond Park Aquatic Center.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for an energetic and creative aquatic professional to join our management team.
The successful candidate will have experience in overseeing swim lesson programming; understand the principles of working with entry-level staff to effectively coach positive performance; and planning, implementing, and managing aquatic programs and special events.
Skills needed to be successful in this position include organization, the ability to plan programs and effectively manage multiple projects and programs at one time.
Desirable skills and experience include:
• Basic principles and practices of supervision and training with specific experience working with younger, inexperienced staff.
• Progressive experience working with and overseeing a comprehensive swim lesson program.
• Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques used in overseeing customer service programs.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of a well-rounded community fitness program.
Typical Responsibilities
This position is responsible for coordinating the planning and oversight of aquatic programming for two facilities- Augustus Brown Pool and Dimond Park Aquatic Center. In this position, your primary responsibility will include:
• Assist in hiring, training, and supervising aquatic program staff including oversight of swim instructors.
• Coordinate with pool supervisors to plan and implement the dates and times of swim lesson sessions.
• Coordinate, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive community aquatic programming. Works with the Aquatics Manager to identify and allocate staffing and materials needed for program implementation.
• Assist with the development, implementation and tracking of marketing strategies.
• Provide a variety of information to the public regarding aquatic programs; respond to questions or concerns and survey patrons as needed.
• Coordinate registration through the department’s point of sale software
• Meeting the evolving needs of the community through innovative program offerings.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work with the Aquatics Manager to develop, plan and implement new recreation programming for the aquatics division including special events, youth activities and fitness classes. You will study current recreation and aquatic trends and develop tools for community outreach to cultivate successful programs for implementation.
In this position, you will also be responsible for working with the Aquatics Manager to plan marketing and promotion for the aquatics division and assist with an annual marketing calendar. You will work with staff at both facilities to keep marketing materials updated and distributed to the community.
You will provide administrative support to the division including operational duties including assisting with cash handling and deposit procedures and coaching staff in providing exceptional customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from high school, or the equivalent

Experience: Two (2) years of providing administrative support to recreational activities/programs. At least six (6) months of experience must be as Recreation Coordinator I with the City of Juneau or the equivalent elsewhere.

Licensure: CPR/First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment

Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment

For Adult/Youth Recreation program:

Substitutions: Experience coaching youth or adult sports activities may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of one (1) sports season of credit for two (2) months experience; OR

Experience officiating youth or adult sports activities may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of ten (10) games per season for credit of two (2) months experience; OR

College study in recreation or physical education may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 2.5 semester hours (3.75 quarter hours) of credit for one month of experience for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

NOTE: There is no substitution for the six months of experience as Recreation Coordinator I with the City of Juneau or the equivalent elsewhere.
