Administrative Duties
Actively supports and upholds the City’s stated mission and values. Employees of this class provide safety instruction duties associated with the aquatics program. These positions are under the direct supervisor of the full time Aquaplex Facility Manager, Aquatics Coordinator and Recreation Assistant, and the general supervision of the full time tenure- eligible Recreation staff.
This is an FLSA non- exempt, temporary recreation position
Examples of the Work Performed
EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Monitors the activities of patrons in the pool area and locker rooms/ cabanas.
- Performs rescue and life-saving techniques.
- Monitors the condition of the swimming pool and ensures that the facility & equipment is safe and usable.
- Clean and maintain facility areas. Includes contact with household chemicals and pool testing kits.
- Demonstrate, teach, and lead swimming instruction or water exercise instruction.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of instructional programs.
- Assists with the promotion of the aquatics programming and lends ideas for improvement.
- Assists the Aquatics Coordinator and Recreation Assistant in the day-to-day planning and implementation of ongoing aquatics program.
- Assists Aquatics Coordinator and Recreation Assistant with planning, implementing and setup/ tear down aquatics special events.
- Supervise Aquatic staff during Lap swim, Parent/Tot Play Time, Recreation Swim, Swim Lessons and Special Events when assigned to do so or when the Aquatics Coordinator or Recreation Assistant is not present.
- Administer disciplinary action of verbal warnings, document verbal warning and formal write-ups for aquatic staff when needed.
- Address patron and staff concerns for Aquaplex aquatic area.
- Perform needed chemical or maintenance adjustments in aquatic pump room.
- Understand and disseminate policies and procedures related to the aquatics programming.
- Attend, assist & lead with aquatic training.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
- Ensures the pool is properly staffed, and in the event of a deficit in staffing; implements a temporary safety cap on the pool.
- Creates daily Lifeguard rotation plans, and actively enforces it while on duty.
- Keeps a shared daily manager log of incidents online.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the Guard Room and First Aid area.
Qualifications
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Starfish Swim Instructor certification.
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certificate.
- Experience teaching swimming at all levels (beginner to advance) and age groups for 1 to 2 years.
- Competitive swimming experience.
- Experience with adaptive aquatics instructional experience.
- Basic management and leadership training or experience for at least a year.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Pre-employment background investigation.
- Ability to work split shifts, weekdays, weekends, early mornings, evening shifts, and holidays as assigned.
- At least 25 hours of availability
Supplemental Information
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to perform lifeguarding and water safety instructor duties according to the City of Flagstaff standards.
- Ability to teach assist with teaching aquatics, lifeguarding and swim lessons instruction skills to other aquatics staff.
- Ability to teach swim lessons (group and private) and water exercise programming to all age groups and at all skill levels.
- Knowledge of swimming techniques and aquatics equipment.
- Ability to administer first aid and CPR using an AED.
- Ability to work effectively with patrons, supervisor, co-workers, and public.
- Basic knowledge of Aquaplex Aquatic area and Aquaplex facility as a whole.
- Basic management and leadership skills.
