Position Description
The objective of the apprentice position in the Photography Program is to develop professionals who can provide leadership and expertise in a fully equipped educational, retail, and/or commercial photography facility.
The apprentice not only provides instructional support for faculty, staff, and students but also develops skills, abilities, and sensitivities for assisting a diverse adult population in an educational setting. Apprentices will develop an understanding of the general processes of a black and white, color, and digital photography facility. They will also develop the necessary skills to maintain, monitor, stock, and inventory the facility to support instruction and/or production of a wide range of photography. Under general supervision, they will learn to provide students with needed equipment; direct students in the appropriate use of equipment; and facilitate a safe learning environment for students, staff, and faculty. They will also facilitate flow of students through a lab facility as well as assist in overseeing the operation of photography equipment in the photography lab.
The apprentice may be employed for a maximum of nine (9) semesters, consecutive or cumulative, including summer sessions, and may not work more than 170 working days or more than 980 hours during the academic year.
Responsibilities
ASSESSMENT
The apprentice works under the direct supervision of the full time photography specialist in the Photography Program and Dean, School of Visual, Performing, and Communication Arts. Progress is measured each semester through direct observation, student surveys, mentoring, and on-going training sessions.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Successful completion of beginning (level A), intermediate and advanced level (Level B) photography courses or equivalent.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate campus and department policy to students and faculty.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of traditional photographic processes, equipment and aesthetics, including studio use and color print processing.
- Knowledge of basic photographic chemicals and processing.
- Knowledge of safety issues of photographic processes involving multi-user public use space.
- Knowledge of Mac OS and Adobe Creative Cloud.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a part-time, pre-professional apprentice position. An apprentice may not work more than 170 working days or more than 980 hours during the fiscal year. Apprentices may be employed for a maximum of nine semesters, consecutive or cumulative, including summer sessions.
