Varsity Band Spring Concert Production Manager

Job Summary:
The UW-Madison Mead Witter School of Music seeks a production manager for its Varsity Band Spring Concert. The individual in this position will play a leading role in executing the artistic vision of the Director of Athletic Bands for this annual spring event, this year taking place with two concerts on April 19 and 20, 2024. This person will be responsible for hiring and overseeing a stage management team; overseeing the work of a ticketing and marketing coordinator; leading the bid process for production equipment and labor for show lighting, video, sound and show pyrotechnics; coordinating and leading production meetings; coordinating with the venue (Kohl Center) in preparation for the event, during tech week and all performances, and with any follow up afterwards; and working with campus partners to plan for video broadcast.

The UW-Madison Varsity Band Spring Concert is a beloved community event that annually attracts a crowd of 10,000 over two evenings. The successful candidate for this position likely has a background in stage-managing or in producing staged events (theater, live music, etc.) and seeks a new experience with a large, multi-media production.
Responsibilities: Oversees various tasks and units related to different aspects of an arts production to turn artistic vision into reality. May work in various areas of media such as theater, TV, film, installations, etc. that require production of artistic materials. Improves efficiency and cost effectiveness of a production by supervising budgeting, taking care of needs of artists and other tasks to ensure schedules and budget are met.

  • 50% Implements the artistic vision while following project specifications, timeline, budget, and deadlines
  • 10% May develop and maintain the production budget which includes, but is not limited to, costs for materials, cast and/or orchestra, property, and other related expenses
  • 30% Develops highly motivated and collaborative production team which includes all those in charge of the various areas of the production including director, set designer, lighting designer, costume designer, musical director, publicist, choreographer, technical director, stage manager, and other functions of the production
  • 10% Meets with various department leads to discuss project improvement

–Min. two years working in stage productions as a stage manager or producer
–Min. one year managing others
–Excellent oral and written skills
–Proven ability to manage complex events

Hours will vary and will increase until the month preceding the event when the role will be needed on a full-time basis.
Much of the work of this event can be done remotely. In the final weeks before production, the person in this role will need to be on-site.
