Description
This is a responsible administrative position charged with supervising and directing Parks & Recreation Maintenance Workers in the operation and maintenance of parks and recreation buildings, open spaces and parks.
Examples of Duties
- Trains, supervises, and recommends disciplinary action for employees performing the duties of maintenance parks operations
- Assists in training new crew members in the proper use of equipment and materials by demonstration and suggestion to ensure proper application of chemicals and minimum breakdown of equipment
- Oversees the operation of Parks maintenance and operations. Assists Parks Supervisor with any leadership tasks and duties
- Ensures that work standards are being adhered to by inspecting assigned work areas and completing inspection reports for review by supervisor
- Mows and maintains parks and open space areas such as baseball and soccer fields; mows weeds; cleans and maintains tennis courts and nets; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads
- Drags ball fields; lines fields for games
- Inspects and performs routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms
- Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs
- Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of the City’s parks and open spaces. Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safety techniques of buildings and grounds maintenance functions
- Performs minor semi-skilled building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other semi-skilled trades work
- Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment
- Maintains and adjusts specialized turf-care equipment and tools, including, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems
- Operates tractors, mowers, sprayers, turf equipment, trucks, and other listed equipment as needed
- Dump garbage and reline cans with liners; empty ash cans
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises
- Opens and closes locks and unlocks facilities as needed
- Keeps records of work completed if requested
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various parks and recreation programs, prepares, facilitates for parks and recreation program use
- Installs and maintains goalposts and nets for sports facilities, including soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, and basketball
- Assists in the construction of new parks, facilities, including cleaning, grading, drainage, and foundation work
- All other duties as requested
Typical Qualifications
- Valid Florida Driver’s License with CDL endorsement, or ability to obtain one
- Four (4) years of experience in Parks & Recreation or landscaping
- Two (2) years of experience in crew leader role for Parks & Recreation or landscaping organization preferred
- Thorough knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; some knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions
- Ability to guide, direct and motivate employees; ability to organize and supervise the activities of various crews performing maintenance work
- Ability to remain calm in stressful conditions
- Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely
- Ability to establish effective working relationships
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment
- Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public
