Writer (Part-Time, On-Call)

Ripple Effect is looking for a Part-Time, On-Call Writer with 6 years of experience to support our client’s mission. This role will work closely with the Communications & Outreach Division to support a variety of projects across the organization. This Position will have a heavy focus on copy-editing and formatting, but may also include science, communications, and business technical writing duties. Topic areas may include scientific research topics, federal grant funding, human subjects research, healthcare payments, or other areas related to science, research, or healthcare fields.

    • Hourly Range: $32.40 – $36.95 per hour

Responsibilities

    • Edit or write materials with technical accuracy, grammar, punctuation, internal consistency, and other metrics as defined on a project basis
    • Format documents in MS Word styles
    • Ensure compliance with Section 508 for all materials edited or written
    • Simplify complex materials for effective presentation to a target audience
    • Utilize best practices for writing /editing, such as maintaining continuity of style, voices, etc.
    • Copy-edit, content edit, or write the following materials:
      • Proposals
      • Scientific reports
      • Manuals
      • Tool kits and fact sheets
      • White papers
      • Web content or blogs
      • Audio, video, or other multimedia podcasts or scripts
      • Meeting summaries
      • Other materials, as assigned
    • Other collaborative tasks as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, English, or other related fields
  • 6 years of relevant experience

Basic Requirements

  • Proficiency in editing scientific reports appropriate for both print and web publication
  • Ability to create content in plain language
  • Ability to work with virtual teams (use of intranet and instant messenger to communicate)
  • Ability to perform substantive editing of complex technical documents
  • Ability to edit materials, as directed, to meet client needs
  • Excellent grammatical/punctuation skills
  • Strong working knowledge of references, such as the GPO, AMA, and Chicago-style manuals
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word
  • Ability to work productively and collaboratively in SharePoint to accomplish tasks
  • Highly organized, efficient, and extremely detail-oriented
  • Ability to prioritize among multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Demonstrated strength in oral and written communication skills, including professional emails
  • Ability to work independently and know when to seek assistance
