Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to serve as an administrative law judge in adjudicated cases involving the regulation of public utilities, telecommunications carriers, and motor carriers, to preside over evidentiary proceedings in which the hearing examiner acts as the NMPRC Commissioners’ proxy, and to provide independent recommended decisions that include intensive legal and policy analyses, findings of fact, and conclusions of law to the Commission for consideration in a final order.
How does it get done?
Manage and organize complex, multi-discipline, and multi-issue cases. Preside over evidentiary hearings sometimes involving up to 20 parties, 40 or more witnesses, and thousands of pages of evidence. Write recommended decisions-which are documents similar to court opinions-after reading and analyzing testimony, technical data, and other evidence.

Ideal Candidate
Experience practicing law in areas directly related to public utility regulation
Experience as an administrative law judge or hearing officer
Educational experience in areas directly related to public utility regulation, such as economics, accounting or engineering
Experience practicing law involving substantial research and writing
Minimum Qualification
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and eight (8) years of experience in the practice of law. Licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA). Employment Requirements
Must maintain a valid NM driver’s license and successfully pass a background check.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with long periods of sitting and exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
