Job Description
STARTING SALARY BASED ON QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
An employee in this class is responsible for assessing and evaluating golf course maintenance needs, planning a maintenance schedule, and supervising the work of the golf course maintenance crew. Work includes supervising course staff, course playability, and renovation of the golf course, golf course irrigation, pesticide application, and related work. Work also includes overseeing and participating in mowing, aerating, moving cups, raking sand traps, and using and operation a variety of tools and equipment. This employee must have the ability to plan and execute a strict schedule in caring for the golf course, to ensure that the course is playable. Work is performed under the general supervision of the golf professional. Work is evaluated for the overall appearance and playability of the golf course and is checked by visual inspection and feedback from patrons. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Examples of Duties
- Supervises and plans daily work of groundskeepers, each working on an assigned crew; assigning responsibilities to crew members
- Monitors the golf course budget; determining supply and equipment needs; developing equipment specifications, comparing prices, and purchasing materials and supplies needed for completion of work
- Inspects golf course for playability, maintenance needs, safety
- Interviews, selects, and trains golf course staff, records time sheets for all employees, approves all leave requests, completes performance appraisals, determines merit pay increases.
- Supervises the irrigation of the golf course; turs pumps on and off; replaces nozzles, repairs leaks and heads, replaces control valves, pump house maintenance, winterizes irrigation system; spot-watering and syringing.
- Supervises and participates in mowing roughs, fairways, and greens; changes cups on greens, tee markers on tees; maintains sand traps; aerates greens, tees, and fairways, uses various aeration equipment; plants trees and grass
- Supervises and participates in spreading fertilizer on greens and fairways, uses a pickup truck; applies preventive and curative pesticides and herbicides to the course.
- Performs related work as required
Qualifications
- Thorough and sufficient technical knowledge of the standards, practices, and procedures of golf course maintenance and turf management
- Thorough knowledge of golf course irrigation and irrigation techniques
- Thorough knowledge of preventive and curative pesticide applications
- Skill in operating a mower, aerator, front end loader, sand trap rake, tractor, leaf blower, weed eater, and other maintenance equipment
- Ability to maintain the city’s golf course in a consistently playable condition throughout the year, despite complications such as extreme weather fluctuations, irrigation complications, and seasonal labor restrictions
- Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the golf course staff
- Ability to maintain accurate records of purchases, equipment problems, and personnel documents
Education and Experience
Associate’s Degree and considerable experience (five to seven years) in grounds keeping, equipment operation, and turf management

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work in this class is medium work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This employee is required to have close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate grounds keeping equipment, and to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned. Employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dusts. This employee is exposed to noise, which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
