Characters We Work With – The Big Bang Theory
A workplace can take on many forms. Some days it feels like a chess match, other days it’s a full contact sport, and there are also times when it feels like we’re in a laboratory, where rather than having tried and true methods for everything we do, it feels more like we are running a series of experiments designed to figure out how to actually run a business. For the newer companies, the startups, experimentation and figuring things out on the fly is not unfamiliar territory. If they had a few of the characters from the hit TV show ‘The Big Bang Theory’, there is a chance that startup may put it all together a little sooner. We may not all share office space with astro-physicists and MENSA members, but even the most gifted people are just people. Let’s dig into this unique blend of brainiacs and see just how closely they line up to the characters we work with every day.
The “Sheldon Cooper” Genius Colleague
Sometimes it is our IT person, and very often it is that person who runs the key data analytics for the organization who seems like a genius with their ability to run numbers, spreadsheets, to provide trending reports in so many ways that it can be both informative and dizzying. That is our office Sheldon. He is always ready to school others on the most obscure facts, and able to deliver a lecture on just about any subject at a moment’s notice. Like the theoretical physicist, the Sheldon is brilliant, even if his social skills are clearly a work-in-progress. That doesn’t mean he is a robot with no sense of humor. The Sheldon is a master of sarcasm, and will attempt what he believes is a masterful one-liner, even if it is he who enjoys it the most. But the team always encourages him with a pity laugh at the very least, knowing that keeping The Sheldon feeling included and part of the team at all times may just lead him to some analytical discovery that propels the business to stardom, and the rest of us right along with it.
The “Penny” Charming Colleague
We can never get enough of the outgoing, delightful, and fun colleagues who exude charm and friendliness at all hours of the working day. She is our office ‘Penny’. With the increasing glut of technical jargon that invades every workplace, most of which the Penny doesn’t understand, but it never stops her from getting her work done, while maintaining her own level of brilliance in how people should relate to one another. Her sense of humor and sociable nature makes people want to get to know the broader organization, those colleagues who otherwise may stay in their lanes, creating pockets and cliques of people with the same tasks, instead of the cohesive unit that makes a business thrive. There is a gap between those we call ‘the brains behind the operation’, and the rest of the team that do the work to deliver it to clients, but none are more valuable than The Penny. She is the bridge between the technical wizards and the rest of the operation, and the glue that binds the team together.
The “Howard Wolowitz” Cheeky Techie
The stereotypical IT person is that smart, techie-type, devoid of personality, and who smugly fixes issues believing they are better than those they support. Like most stereotypes, it has no basis in fact, and we have all worked with great IT people whom we loved and valued over the years. Here we have One such person at our workplace is the Howard, who leads our IT efforts. The Howard does have the classic penchant for all things tech, loves gadgets, and is a true Ace when it comes to solving any network or computer issues that arise. What some believe makes him a different breed of I.T. Guy is his great sense of humor and ability to easily relate to the team he supports. The Howard is a fun and sociable guy, and one that you don’t mind reaching out to when you’ve gotten your computer stuck. You know he’ll not only resolve the issue quickly, but he’ll give you something laugh about, although it often straddles the line of appropriateness. But even that makes The Howard unique in his role, and just another reason we love having the Howard as a key member of our team.
The “Amy Farrah Fowler” Awkward Overachiever
With a lot of brainpower around the office, none can top The Amy. She is brilliant, and like The Sheldon, is part of the brain trust that powers the analytics that drive every big business decision. The Amy is a delight to be around, is a sweet, kind person, and generous with her work and her time. She is neither extroverted, nor introverted. She is somewhere in the middle, seeming to not always know the situation she finds herself in, and thus seems a bit lost on how to interject. If the mood is light, the Amy may seem serious. If the mood is somber, or something urgent has everyone around her on edge, that may be the time the Amy thinks to break out a new joke she heard. You wonder if the human brain can only process so much, as it seems the gifts she has for business theory, numbers, analytics have squeezed out the social awareness and skills that people expect everyone to have. But for any social skills she may lack, she easily makes up for with her incredible contributions to oru work, without which, we may not all have a thriving business to work for.
The “Raj Koothrappali” Charming Communicator
With the technical and social aspects of the business covered at a high level, we always need someone to be the face and voice of the business. That is our PR lead, The Raj. He is the one who shares the level of brilliance as some others in the organization do, but his gifts are for relating to people and telling a story that people want to hear. The charm and charisma of The Raj is second to none. He will step into the most uncertain, even volatile situations, and handle them with grace and ease. He is never at a loss for words, quickly identifying the best way to handle a situation, spin it, and execute it flawlessly. The Raj also loves when our other colleague, The Penny, organizes a Happy Hour get together after work, as he loves an excuse to pull an audience together. He is prone to bouts of liquid courage, but even then, his confidence is not much higher than it normally is, so most don’t even notice the difference.
While the characters on the Big Bang Theory may be able to split the atom, or create an A.I. driven Robot out of old radio parts, their true success lies in their ability to relate to one another and work as a team to accomplish scientific achievements. This incredible ensemble cast easily reminds us of some of the best places we’ve worked in OUR careers, where we have experienced the same thing. Being part of a team, comprised of smart people with complementary skills, who come together in support of one another, we have hit on something special, all thanks to The Characters We Work With.
