Characters from Law & Order We All Work With
There are many stops most of us take throughout our career, where deadlines and projects play out like a high profile trial, and office politics play out like a TV drama. It is easy to see an uncanny resemblance between the colleagues we’ve shared office space with and a few of the characters from the long-running hit TV show Law & Order. Get ready to slam your gavel, but try not to raise too many objections as we compare the characters of this show to the characters we all work with in the court of our office.
The Detective Lennie Briscoe
Doesn’t it always seem that in each of our career stops we find that one of our colleagues seems like the office detective. We call him the Detective Lennie Briscoe. He is the one with a desert-like dry sense of humor with a knack for uncovering hidden truths and sifting through office gossip, just like a seasoned investigator. The Detective Lennie works to overcome the many business hiccups that challenge most, but for which Lennie is prepared for. You can also count on him to layer in a few jokes designed to lighten the mood and help everyone to stay calm and focused. Don’t’ let his humor fool you. The Lennie is as shrewd and observant as and crime drama detective, and will never stop until he gets to, and exposes, the truth.
The Anita Van Buren
Meet the no-nonsense manager of the office. She is the one who runs a tight ship and keeps everyone in line – the Captain Anita Van Buren. Her keen eye for detail is unparalleled, never missing a detail, so those around know they are wise to inspect and fact-check their work before the Anita sees it. She never hesitates to lay down the law when she needs to, much like a good Captain of a precinct. The Anita will always prioritize team unity, ensuring that everyone is working together, and not putting themselves and their own goals and ambitions ahead of what is best for the team. The Anita is all about being transparent and direct, so when she tells you to jump, you need not question why, but simply ask ‘How High?’.
The Alexandra Borgia
In every workplace, we see that smooth-talking colleague who can seemingly negotiate their way of even the stickiest situations. How they do it is a mystery to you, but it’s clear that they have been doing it so long, it is always effortless. That is our Alexandra Borgia. If you need to convince the execs that we a budget increase is needed for an upcoming initiative or project, the Alexandra is the right person to knock on the right door and make it happen. The ability of the Alexandra to spin the right words that give the brass no option but to comply is second to none. The Alexandra has that enviable ability to charm and persuade anyone, anywhere. And while you also see that she may have a secondary motive to leverage that ability to get ahead and grab that promotion, you are cool with it. Become a lead in your business can only bring success as you know she’ll lobby for whatever it takes to give your team what it needs, convince existing and new clients to buy what you’re selling, and ensure that you have a place to stay and work for a long time, which brings great comfort and security to you and your colleagues.
The Mike Logan
While many of our colleagues seem as cool as the other side of the pillow, there are a few that reveal that can be as fiery as Detective Mike Logan. If things happen not to go their way, you and everyone will know about it. You are more often smarter not to confront it, but to take shelter, keep your head down and wait until it passes. The Mike has a tendency to let his emotions get the best of him, which sometimes results in an epic showdown with another colleague, even the boss. The Mike won’t shy away from voicing his opinion and disdain for whatever change or shift in the business he believes is not one that will serve clients or the team. While good to have on your side, you are often weary that you’ll be lumped in with the over-the-top approach the Mike often takes to get his point across. Of course you also see that the Mike actually has a big heart, and while usually going about it the wrong, sometimes scary, way, he will always have your back, and the reason the boss tolerates the tumult the Mike can create is because he is excellent at his work and his passion for what the company does is undeniable.
The Jack McCoy
We have all worked with a colleague who is as relentless as District Attorney Jack McCoy. Their approach to every project is one with supreme determination, much like a seasoned prosecutor. The Jack will cross-examine every detail until they get to the truth, or at least snuff out one solution that works. From their ability to negotiate the right deal or defending the decisions of their team, the Jack is unafraid to be bold, making statements, even bending the rules if it works in their favor. Their most effective play is the ‘McCoy Maneuver’, which is usually unexpected, but always seems to work out for him, and usually for us as well.
Building and presenting our case in the courtroom of our office, we find that our colleagues are a mis of many of the unique and colorful characters of Law & Order. Like our office, there is a mix of the tenacious, stealth-like, curious, hot-headed, and smooth-talker. It always keeps things interesting, and it gives us all the opportunity to learn the many different ways that people approach their work and arrive at decisions. Such variety gives us the right balance of perspectives that build our own good decision-making without causing an office-courtroom spectacle that can find is In Contempt.
