Characters We Work With – The Facts of Life
The hit show ‘The Facts of Life’ details the journey of young women in prep school, growing together, first as roommates and classmates, and over time become friends and family. Their distinct and unique personalities and life experiences create a complementary mix that help each become mature women ready to step out into the world to begin their adult lives. Let’s look at a few of our Facts of Life personalities and see just how well they line up with The Characters We Work With.
The Mrs. Garrett
Of the many leaders we work with throughout our careers, those who bring the supportive, maternal instinct and approach are always among our favorites. Our motherly manager is The Mrs. Garrett. The Mrs. Garrett oversees most of the operation, and is the true people person among the leadership team. She always has the right answer, and makes herself available for anyone on the team at any time. The sage advice the Mrs. Garrett offers always resonates and helps the team refocus, get back on task, and reminds us all why we love being part of her team.
The Natalie
Our solid, self-sufficient co-worker who brings team spirit and energy to her work each day is The Natalie. She has the talent and capability to go to the next level with training and mentorship, but needs to build her self-confidence if she is going to get there. The Natalie will frequently second guess her decisions, which are usually the right ones. Still, we believe that with experience, and taking the lessons that other good leaders set for her, the Natalie can overcome her development areas and be the leader we see in her future.
The Jo
In every workplace, a common personality we see is the vocal truth-teller who can never simply go along with a plan unless they understand and believe in it. Our Truth-Teller is the Jo. The Jo is rough around the edges, bringing a blue-collar mentality to the team, which works exceedingly well in her ability to get all of her work done without breaking a sweat. Working alongside her, we learn the meaning of the phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, as the Jo proves that how someone talks or walks or expresses themselves, is not an indication of intelligence or business savvy. The Jo is one of our favorite colleagues thanks to her willingness to stand up for change, for her teammates, bringing good humor and loyalty to the team that is found in short supply.
The Tootie
We work with our fair share of rising stars throughout our career journey, who bring great presence and intellect that seems to be a cut above. Our rising star we call the Tootie. The Tootie is what we call our ‘Young Gun’, just out of school and fairly new to the company. It did not take long for everyone to see that The Tootie is a quick learner, diving right in to the work she’s been assigned without much support, and asking very few questions. These are all of the right early signs we look for in a new employee. With the quality of work she produces, we believe the Tootie will not be with us long if she continues to bring that work ethic, business acumen, and fun, energetic personality that has endeared her to the team and has upper management taking notice.
The Blair
On at least one or two career stops, we encounter the person born with the silver spoon in their mouth. Our Silver Spooner is The Blair. The Blair came in with an air of superiority, finding different ways to rub people the wrong way with a condescending comment, or trying to outdo what someone else has shared that they’ve done. Such a personality can hide what is often a talented and good-hearted person, who has the education, training and pedigree to rise through the organization, but has yet to learn proper etiquette for relating to people. We believe the Blair suffers more from immaturity, and as she grows up, and learns some valuable and humbling lessons, she will find her path, take herself down a peg, and become the approachable, welcoming personality that will take her far in her career.
No matter the work setting, we see similarities that connect us all. With goals to achieve, tasks to do to, and people around us getting their work done to make the business run. The 80s Hit Show ‘The Facts of Life’ shows us how the business of Prep School can flourish when good people come together, willing to learn from one another, and have strong leaders at the helm. Such a workplace we reflect back on as some of the happiest career moments, giving us a smile when we reminisce about The Characters We Work With.
