Characters from Family Ties We All Work With
The Steven Keaton
As the manager of the team, Steven is someone that most people get along with very easily, and all love him for his strong convictions and his sense of family. While this is the workplace, Steven looks at his team as his family, and as such has a tendency to ‘parent’ when he should be managing, putting people off at times, feeling more like they are being reprimanded or scolded instead of being coached and developed. In the end, people appreciate working for and with Steven, because while his management techniques may be lacking, all come to realize that he is actually a fine role model and while they may never become better at their job under Steven, they surely will become better people.

The Mallory Keaton
Mallory came to the company a while back, and took a while to become the productive worker she is today. She came in with thought bigger and grander plans than she thought this company could offer, and why the impression she gave was someone who lacked any sort of devotion to the company or her work. For most of the early part of her career here, she maintained enough production to stay employed, while never becoming anyone’s ‘Go To’ team member. Over time, Mallory seemed to mature, and began to show you and the team that there was more to her than you previously thought. You began to see that there was a great deal of talent underneath the cool exterior. The fact that she now is showing more, and doing so consistently, tells you that it was only ever about her ‘Will-Level’, not her ’Skill-Level’. You, and the rest of the team, having seen Mallory blossom into a more mature professional, now look forward to seeing what she will do in the years to come.

The Irwin ‘Skippy’ Handelman
Skippy is a solid worker around the office. He always seems peppy and full of energy, offering a light joke even though he most often is the only one who laughs at it. He is unphased by the lack of being perceived seriously, just happy to be part of something. You worry a bit about Skippy, feeling that if you suffered from the lack of being taken seriously for that long you would have become defeated or left for something better along the way. But Skippy is simply a unique breed, and the more you work with him, the stronger you feel that there is something to be gained in life by tuning out the noise, the whispers that some perceive are happening behind their backs, and simply moving forward to stay the light, positive force that overshadows the less serious perceptions that Skippy may never realize are even out there.

The Elyse Keaton
As you think about the ‘Alpha’ team members, Elyse is right up there with the best of them. She is super smart, highly productive, and extremely creative. There is no challenge you have ever seen put in front of Elyse that she has been unable to figure out a plan to get through it successfully. She is as highly regarded for her great work, and care for her team as anyone on the team. Yet, you have seen opportunities come over the years, and although Elyse has sought several of them, she remains in the role she has always done as far as you know, which makes you wonder what others see that you don’t. As you dig deeply in the many experiences you have had with her, and those where you have seen her challenge the status quo, even when at odds with her superiors, you sense that some of her ‘great qualities’ may not be perceived the same from those above. You always saw her passion as one of her strongest qualities, but recognize that this passion is sometimes unrelenting, even stubborn in her pursuit of trying always to ‘do the right thing’. It begins to make more sense as you consider what you may do if you ran the show, and whether having someone on your team who, regardless of the size or impact of an issue, may be so overly passionate in her opinion that it holds up the decision-making process. While you feel she deserves a shot at the next level, you understand why the company may feel it is not worth the risk, when at her current level she is consistently among the most effective team members.

The Alex P. Keaton
In every office and every workplace there are strong performers, average workers, smart team members, those who range from competent to exceptional, from somewhat talented to truly gifted, and from ho-hum personalities to those who are quirky and a lot of fun. Then there is that category of employee not present in every workplace, but whom we have all seen, but never for very long. He is Alex P. Keaton, and the one often referred to as ‘The Golden Boy’. He can seemingly do no wrong. Everyone loves him, even those who prefer to call him a ‘kiss-up’ because the bosses all seem to love him and everything he does. Men, Women, Execs, Entry-Level’ers, the folks in the mailroom, and those running the coffee shop all love when Alex comes by. He not only is good at his job, he has a great personality to boot. You quickly realized upon working with Alex that it is not a matter of style over substance, nor anything to do with having an inside or family connection that he is so revered. It is him, the confidence he exudes and the talent he displays. Alex has an intellect that is simply off the charts, beyond gifted, likely to have a MENSA-Level IQ. The reason we don’t see the Alex P. Keatons for very long is because they are simply too talented no matter where they go. Alex will rise and rise and rise. You know it and so does everyone else. The bigger the company, the farther he will go, until he realizes that even at the upper-most levels, he has more to do, and likely to break out of the corporate chains into a life of public service or speaking, or run a company that allows him to learn the true value of what can be accomplished with such talent.
