summer season for Park Maintenance Laborers
The City of Bloomington seeking individuals to perform various types of manual labor and equipment operation in Bloomington parks: mowing/trimming, forestry work, athletic field and picnic shelter prep. Positions work 40 hours per week (with the possibility of overtime). Shifts may include days, evenings, or weekends.

Essential Functions of the Position
- Serves as a City representative by demonstrating a professional demeanor and positive attitude.
- Operates, inspects, and maintains equipment and tools such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, steel wheel rollers, pickups, air compressor with related tools, chain saws, shovels, rakes and miscellaneous equipment and tools as apparent or assigned. Provide routine service maintenance where needed (grease, oil, gas, etc.).
- When directed, assists in maintenance duties in any of the five Public Works Maintenance Division sections.
- Keeps assigned supervisor informed of important developments concerning assigned functions.
- Maintains effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Responsible to work overtime, shift changes, or be on call as necessary or assigned.
- Adheres to and keeps current on safety rules and procedures, and any work rules and policies that pertain to the Park Maintenance Division.
- Performs job responsibilities in climatic extremes, in confined spaces, and/or from aerial lift equipment.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
Example Functions of the Position when assigned to Park Maintenance
- Turf Maintenance: Mowing, weed control, aeration, fertilization, irrigation repair and installation, field renovation, seeding, and operate applicable equipment for this program.
- Arboriculture: Plant, prune, remove, mulch, fertilize, and water trees. Maintain shrub beds and natural plant settings.
- Ballfields: Groom infields and mounds, repair backstops, fences, and other applicable facilities. Layout and paint soccer and football fields. Operate applicable equipment for this program.
- Tennis, Volleyball, Horseshoe Courts: Install/replace nets, repair fences, etc., rake, level, add sand.
- Park Buildings: Provide minor repairs, paint, and clean.
- Equipment: Clean, grease, and paint. Equipment includes playground equipment, mowers, tables, benches, and picnic grills.
- Picnic Areas: Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends attending to reservations at the City’s staffed picnic areas. Duties include cleaning and preparing the picnic shelters for guests before and in between reservations along with other Park Maintenance tasks assigned.
- General: Remove trash; maintain trails and waterways; repair/install split rail fence; and sweeping of sidewalks and bikeways.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Good mechanical aptitude – ability to readily learn to operate small hand tools and minor equipment such as saws, trimmers, riding mowers, and hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic equipment.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions including safety rules.
- Ability to wear personal protective safety gear/equipment.
- Ability to do some lifting, bending, climbing, reaching, overhead pushing, and pulling (may lift up to 75 pounds).
- Ability to perform job responsibilities in climatic extremes.
- Ability to work from aerial lift equipment.
- Ability to perform routine repair and maintenance tasks.
- Ability to tolerate paint and chemical solvents.
- Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees and the general public.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a crew or team.
- Ability to work overtime, shift changes, including evenings and weekends, or holidays.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.50 – $18.20 Hourly
2023 Full Salary Range: $16.50 – $18.20 Hourly
Commitment Bonus – A seasonal employee who works until at least August 5th will receive a $100 bonus on their final paycheck.
Referral Bonus – A seasonal employee who refers a new seasonal employee will receive a $100 bonus on their final paycheck. Referring employee needs to contact Human Resources within one week of new seasonal employee’s start date. Both employees must be employed for the entirety of the scheduled season to be eligible.
