Position Description

This position is located in the Facilities Management Department.

Salary Grade: A4

This position manages the Renovations and Interiors Division of the Pima County Project Design and Construction Department consisting of architects, interior designers, design specialists, and project managers.

This division oversees and coordinates all tenant improvement projects for Pima County, including the development and maintenance of interior-design standards, monitoring vendor contracts, and verifying incoming work and work assignments.

This position also carries the Registered Plant Permit and is responsible for reporting work performed under the registered plant to the Building Code Official at the end of each calendar year.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)

Plans, organizes, and manages architectural, space, and capital planning and related activities for the Facilities Management Department;

Reviews drafting project plans and approves complex architectural specifications;

Establishes, reviews and schedules work priorities for assigned staff;

Monitors preparation of contracts for professional services and for construction projects;

Reviews contractor project funds and change orders and prepares projections;

Plans, assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of professional and paraprofessional staff;

Establishes needs for and conducts or arranges for training of professional and paraprofessional staff;

Advises the Director on capital improvement projects and assists in developing long-range capital improvement plans;

Participates in the development of project budgets for capital improvement projects for other County departments for use in preparing their annual department budgets;

Develops space allocation programs and analyzes County departmental space needs to project growth patterns and long-range space needs;

Oversees and participates in the development of facility construction drawings and specifications for buildings;

Evaluates construction and material bids and makes award recommendations;

Certifies construction and planning documents prepared by self or professional staff by affixing registered architect seal;

Participates in the development of departmental procedures and standards;

Prepares the division budget and identifies priority projects.

Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in architecture, or closely related discipline as defined by the Appointing Authority at the time of recruitment and six years of professional architectural experience.

Preferred Qualifications (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  1. Minimum five (5) years experience with interior renovations and/or remodel projects with costs ranging from $500,000 to $5 million.
  2. Minimum five (5) years experience with governmental/public service building projects with costs ranging from $1 to $5 million.
  3. Experience working with a variety of building types – i.e. office, health care, animal care, justice, libraries, etc.
  4. Minimum five (5) years of experience managing a team of professionals that are responsible for overseeing multiple projects simultaneously.
  5. Experience analyzing departmental space needs to project growth patterns and long-term space planning.
  6. Experience with/knowledge of developing project budgets and schedules from preliminary scope and program information.
  7. Experience managing sub-consultant contracts including developing scopes of work, fee negotiation, and tracking/monitoring progress.
  8. Experience with construction administration for interior renovations.

Supplemental Information
Licenses and Certificates: All positions require registration as a licensed Architect in the United States of America with registration as a professional Architect in the State of Arizona at the time of appointment. Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.
